Tom,

You're correct. I was "grandfathered" in under the Taft-Hartley in the filming of the movie CASINO more than 10 years ago. I got one check from the studios for my bit part. No residuals.

You can "job in" under the Taft-Hartley act. They sign a waiver and you do the job and get paid as though you were a union guy.

You only get a couple of shots like this and then you're a "must-join".

The upshot here is: you can do this union job, even though you are non-union.

Courvo-- "grandfathered" refers to a priori agreements which are allowed to stand even though current rules have changed.

Taft-Hartley is a union-only waiver.

After you complete this first gig, the T.H. gives you 30 days to work as many union jobs as you can. Then after that 30 day period you must join the union. That's how my agent expained it to me.

Work begets work, dude. Whether you join the union or not as a result of this small part, if you do a good job and make strong contacts, the odds are good that the next gig that comes along will be union, anyway. Which means good money, better exposure, etc. I think you're in a win-win situaton!

Thanks for the clarification.

I dunno -- I've carefully studied the many many posts here and elsewhere about union VS non-union, and it's only served to thoroughly confuse me.

My daddy brought me up to hate unions, so I naturally avoid them.

In 30 years of broadcast TV work, I've never had to join....in fact, I've never seen a TV station that works well with unions on board. It only serves to strangle and divide the staff....but hey, sometimes management does that on their own, and >PRESTO< union!

For me as an individual voice-over artist, I guess there will be a threshold where I will want to join, or be asked to join to be able to get the upper-echelon jobs.

I'd hate to think I'd have to join a union to get those kinds of jobs, but the East Coast and the West Coast work that way, and since they control most of the media industry directly or indirectly, I'll have to make that decision sooner or later.
