Don't get a C1 or B1...get a CS1 or CS5! Smile

Well now I'm curious. Why? What is it you like better about the CS1 or CS5 over the C1 for voiceover?

I have not read the first 9 pages of this thread, I just jumped to the end and saw Lance mention the CS5. I own one - encouraged by Lance's endorsement - and am very very happy using it. It took me a few days to get used to it, but now it has become my default go-to mic for everything. I got it from fronendaudio.com for less than $300, and at that price it is an absolute steal! I'm happy to send you a sample file if you wish - PM me.

And now that I think about it, I used to own a C1 too, so I can send you samples comparing the C1 to the CS5.

Tom,

I just pm'd you my email addy. I'd love to hear samples. Thanks!

Honestly, I like the idea of the C5 if it would be good for VO. While not a primary consideration, from what I read it would be a nice choice for recording when I play the dulcimer - especially if I can get it for around $300.

I do have a guy offering to swap cash plus a C1 for the RE20. Waiting to hear back from him on if it's the older or newer C1 and see some pics. OTOH these are cheap enough I think I'd rather go new. I love buying used gear most of the time but I get leary of buying used mics from people I don't know.

There's a nasty thunderstorm about to hit and with the radar showing lots of lightning strikes I think I'll power down for a while and go study or something.

If you're going to get the C1, get the newer. The voicing of the mic has been changed, i.e. less sibilant.

The best thing to do, if you can, would be to brow or rent the mics, and try them out in your booth, with your gear. That's the only real way.

I'm gland the little tweak to the booth helped.

Yeah. That's hard around here. There are rental places in Mobile and Pensacola that sometimes carry stuff I want/need but they're geared more towards outside P/A stuff.

Gotta wait until I sell the RE20 and/or a few other things first. As the wise Mr. Petty says, "The waiting is the hardest part."

Well things are coming along nicely. The fabric is up on all the walls now and it looks great. John Weeks stopped by yesterday and we tried his Gefell in there. Boy that's a great sounding mic.

It's a little tight for pictures now:

So I've attempted a youtube video. It runs about 2 minutes:

Hart's Booth Tour

I think I'll order a plaque and dedicate it as the Mike Somner wing of BHP/Hart Voice Overs.

P.S. I stopped by my audio place in Pensacola yesterday but they don't carry the Studio Projects stuff. There is a store in Mobile that does so I'll make a trip that way one day and check them out. You can't return mics to them though (they claim for health reasons but that's BS) and I don't know if they have a rental program but I'm going to ask.

brian - very cool! i assume you were using the on-board mic on the video camera? you could REALLY hear the difference as soon as you stepped foot inside the booth.

Thanks all.

Nope, that was the 416 all the way. I had planned on using the onboard mic from the camera and then switching to the 416 when I shut the door but it sounded too crappy.

I don't actually own a video camera. This is shot with my "boat" camera. It's an Olympus Stylus Tough 8000. I bought it because it is water proof to 33 feet down, resistant to temperature extremes, and shock resistant. The video function was a nice bonus but the mic sucks. The internal whirs and whizzes of the camera are very distracting.

Yeah, it helps, lol.

I just ordered a copy stand and light for the the booth. Can't wait for them to come in. I now have a headphone distribution amp in the booth (thanks John!) so I can control my headphone volume in there.

That's about it for today. Since the daycare is closed J.D. is home with Daddy. So we're going to go play on the playset and maybe do a little shopping for needed items for the boat. At least I can get those locally.
