I have a saved Google Alert search that checks Craigslist across the country each day for voiceover gigs. These two popped up today and I thought I'd share:
Quote: | Voice actor needed for promotional video voice over (chicago)
Date: 2010-03-24, 9:10PM CDT
Reply to: gigs-wqvup-1660049814@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?]
Looking for voice talent for a professional voice over for a 3 minute company impact video. We would need you to come to our location in Chicago (near Soldier Field) for a couple hours to record the audio. Must be able to provide samples. Please also provide your free days as we can be flexible around your schedule as to when you can come in.
Location: chicago
it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests
Compensation: $40 for the session
PostingID: 1660049814

That's right, kids: a two-hour session in Chicago for $40. And you have to drive to their location. "But, Mom! I'm making $20 DOLLARS AN HOUR! That's WAY more than my McDonald's job pays!"
The next one is even better:
Quote: | Blockbuster Products is looking for a MALE VOICE OVER for a national Direct Response commercial for a new auto product.
This assignment can turn into many more assignements with pay.
Description is as follows:
Sex: Male
Language: English
Type of Product: New Auto Polish
Time: Last week of March or First Week of April 2010
Location: Northern NJ, however it can be recorded anywhere.
Ad Campain: Initially domestic, if succesful will be international
Pay: Copy of commercial on DVD or electronically and ample supply of product. Future work will be paid.
The time and excat location is to be determined based on your schedule.
If interested please send a sample of voice over via email to talent@blockbusterproducts.com |
Whoo hoo! You get paid in car wax! An "ample supply?" For me, that's maybe one can which will last me, like, 5 years. So, in effect, this job pays about the same as the grocery store bag-boy job I had at age 15 back in the 70's when minimum wage was $1.50.
I think I'll go crawl back in bed and dream of a higher paying career like delivering phone books.

So, does this mean that as well as doing the voice, I then have to go and find a burial site for their dead moggy?

Imagine if you had taken the ShamWow on air gig for just a percentage of sales and no talent fee.
Sometimes you gotta take a chance. (I'm being serious) You just never know. _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

Well, yeah, but there's a difference between a percentage of sales and getting paid in car wax. Unless maybe you own a car detailing shop on the side. _________________ Bob Ransom

Years ago, I had a guy try to pay me with an area rug.
I'm not kidding.
After I thought everything for the gig had been hammered out, he invited me to his showroom... to pick out a rug with a retail value equal to my quoted rate. _________________ the Amy Snively family of brands for all your branded thing needs.

Vince's moment of shining glory. Bad enough to get busted with a hooker but to get busted after the hooker beats you up? That's one that'll make Mom and Dad proud! _________________ Bob Ransom
