It's funny you mention that. I've always thought my "DJ" voice is at it's best about 6:30 in the morning after a night out on the town with a bottle of Jack Daniels and a good cigar and running on two hours of sleep. Of course I'm not a morning guy or a young man capable of such behaviour all the time any more.
Seriously though, my "deep voice" stuff does seem to be more resonant when recorded in the morning. My attempts at everyman seems to be better in the afternoon. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

Early in the morning is good for me, once I get the caca out of my head and throat, and the more I read/announce the better it gets (up to a point). And I believe I got much of my vocal qualities from the whisky and cigarettes of my early radio days. However, in the immortal revised lyrics of Eric Burdon, "Oh mother, tell your children, not to DO what I have done!"
Speaking of doing too much, I just did two solid hours of narration on Thursday for a children's interactive education program, and did it at the higher end of my register with a great deal of animation (I'm a talking fish), and my throat's still a bit achy today. I have a few more hours to do, but we're spreading it out over the next couple of weeks. Pacing my friends, pacing. _________________ VO-BB Member #31 Enlisted June, 2005

I'm in the early-morning sultry camp.
I can occasionally get some decent deep-niss late in the evening. and my overall range is MUCH greater at the end of the day.
Of course, I'm only a recent enrollee to the whiskey and cigarette school of vocal development. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

My voice is at it's deepest and oldest-sounding it the morning, which means I sound like I'm 24 instead of 19! I'm at my best in the mid-morning. Fortunately, most of my VO sessions that I commute to start around 10 AM so it works out pretty well. _________________ Tom Dheere - The "H" is Silent, but I'm Not!

I must be an odd-ball. My voice sounds better in the afternoon... and best in the evening. It also helps if it's a little damp out. I've also learned that a certain food can mess up my pipes for several hours. BLUEBERRIES! _________________ "Bailey"

Never... LOL
It all depends on the sound that is desired... if I need the VOG sound, then either early, early morning or late, late at night (or after a few Irish, but that's a different sound altogehter...) - however, I find I don't have as much control over my energy levels at those hours. Normal and 'alive' mid-day. 'official' - afternoon, 'knowledgable' - mid-day, etc.
Some feel that when their vocal chords are relaxed and mellow after awakening from a deep sleep they sound better, but do they really?
Your (and my) sound - depends only on your frame of mind, and our talent(s) - what 'we' hear in ourselves and desire, is not necessiarly what others hear and/or desire from us. If your talent exists - you are able to summon up the "sound" - as you need - for that particular moment and copy.

Yeah, they do.
I'm telling you, Frank-- there are only certain times where I can summon a really grand resonance at the end of words. Other times, the airflow doesn't vibrate the vocal chords the way I'd prefer and I have to change my attack and decay. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Think about it!
Your vocal chords have been at rest for a sustained period of time while you're asleep. This means when you awaken, they're loose and relaxed. (Unless, of course, you talk in your sleep).
So, if it's deep resonance -that ballsy sound - it's most often achieved best shortly after you awaken.
YMMV |

DB, you said it right... Quote: | Quote DB: " ...and I have to change my attack and decay. | That shows that you have talent... Being able to control that 'resonance' and the flow of air is what our 'talent' IS. Practice the 'sound' you like to achieve with the resonance you wish to hear - you might find that with a little work, you CAN achieve that same sound any time of day. It's what makes Don LaFontaine, Don LaFontaine. The ability to control his voice qualities.
Doc: Quote: | "...So, if it's deep resonance -that ballsy sound -it's most often achieved best shortly after you awaken." | Yes, you can be freshly awakened and get that deep resonant sound, but can you control your sound the way you can a couple of hours later?
Again, the 'talent' inherent inside of you is what makes your "sound" - not necessarily the time of day... Yes, your bone structure, the chacteristics of your vocal chords, your weight, whether you have eaten recently, the way you form words, your breathing, etc. - DO have something to do with it too....
It took some work, but when I wish to sound D-e-e-p, I have learned to breathe, control and relax the muscles in my neck, vocal chords, and espophagus. How to attack the structure of the sentences and wording emphasis are part of how it's done and anyone can do it. It just takes fore-thought and sometimes a little meditative state prior to the actual session. These are techniques I learned by singing. (O.K., I can't carry a tune in a bucket, and I often get requests - to sing "Way Out On A Mountain" - way - way out - but...)
My first Mentor, a man named Les Bagley (who does not have a teriffic voice, mind you), told me a little secret. He said. "..it's not what you have, it's how you use it...". He is extremely creative and HIS talents are revealed in his abilty to USE and control his voice in ways I will likely never achieve.

As I stated - YMMV!
It IS all about control, et. al. Nonetheless, the deep, resonant voice (not necessarily powerful) seems to come effortlessly to many following a night's rest. What you do with it is another story.
When I did morning drive, I found that my voice was clearest and deepest after about 15 minutes. This is the sound I wanted when doing an air shift. However, my commercial voices seemed to better in the afternoon.
Works for me! |

Thursdays between 2.45pm and 2.47pm. There was a Friday just before breakfast but I think that was just a fluke. |
