I met with my accountant last weekend, and after going over all my file folders full of figures - he asked the usual follow up questions including what business publications I purchase.

"Um....none."Mello

He found it hard to believe that I don't just 'pick up a magazine here or there' for getting me some of that there business acumen. Got me wondering....what do you all read to keep up with all things VO - any highly recommended mags for tech, work, industry insight?

hmmmm... I don't subscribe to any mags about vo, but any books I buy about the topic are written off.

I do get a few VO related books occasionally....and the receipts do go in the file for tax purposes...I was just wondering if there are any magazines, or periodicals that are considered 'must reads' for our kind.

I wish I had more time to read magazines.....

I do get Speech Technology (only of interest if you do Telephony work really)...and scan through it...and that's free.
I pick up "Success" every few months.
I get the Digital version of "EQ", but haven't really read that in a while.
I also pick up "Psychology Today" and "Fast Company" a few times a year if I see an article of interest.

I also get "The Rotarian" and "Better Investing" mailed every month since I'm a Rotarian and a member of an investment club....but don't get to those every month either! Angry

For entrepreneurial inspiration I go to my friend/mentor Barbara Winter's website http://www.joyfullyjobless.com/ and blog: http://joyfullyjobless.com/blog/

In terms of VO reading, most of that is also done Online with VoiceOverXtra, Bob & Peter's blogs, and those of other VO-BBers!, the stuff on Voices.com & various VU groups.

...and like Caryn, any VO book that comes out I usually get.

Laugh

I used to subscribe to Radio and Production magazine and I love it but that's more for producing than VO. I did write it off though. I cancelled a while back when I was cutting expenses. I miss reading Ad Age sometimes too.

I love it as much for the monthly CD as I do for the articles. Dave Foxx always has some good production ideas to share.

Magazines largely stink and are the print version of what radio has become. The biggest joke is how Wired, with all of its articles about 21st century innovation for more efficient living, is littered nothing but ads for cigars, liquor, watches (seriously, watches???) and other luxury items more suited for 19th and early 20th century.

Radio World
Radio
Tape Op
Mix
EQ
Electronic Musician

None of them specifically VO, but frequent articles about mic technique, signal processing, etc.

National Geographic
Scientific American
Bulletin of The American Meteorological Society

Suppose I should work a business or vo related publication in there somewhere. Ninja

Time
New Yorker
Sunset

All not exactly deductible....

I get my VO info from the blogs these days, and thankfully they're still free.
