I think there are some musicians on this board- right?

This is totally random- and I'm researching the answer for a client...what are normal rates for creating custom music beds? I know the rates on various royalty free sites, but this would be a custom bed used exclusively by the client...I'm assuming as a complete buyout.

Not sure if anyone here would know this answer- but I thought I'd throw it out there! Thanks in advance!

Kara,

One composer we worked with when I was with the Billy Graham Association charged us $1500 for a custom bed. Another wanted $5000 for a somewhat more extensive project. I think you'll find prices are all over the map depending on the experience and skill of the musician involved. (Kinda like voiceover.)

It really depends on usage, the artist, and the client. If the client is in love with a particular music style of a musician they probably have a price they are willing to pay.

Check this out. http://www.afm.org/uploads/file/public_pdf/Jingle%20Summary%202009.pdf

It's up to what the artist wants and what the client will pay.

I've charged between $1500 and $2500 for my original custom music beds, and that includes :60, :30, :15 edits and various stingers - but these projects were for large corporate events. My budget could in theory be much lower for say a local non-profit, or much higher for broadcast/film: and the quality of work would be reflected in that.

I really should focus on doing more of that work when I can. I really enjoy it - but it does take some time.

My hubby does soundtrack work, too, and his answer was -- depends. But, the rates quoted here are somewhat representative. His soundtracks are usually longer, but not always, hence more money.

I know this is old and you may have already provided a quote but for more answers you might try asking on the forums at www.gearslutz.com and or www.recording.org. A lot of professional music types hang out there that do this stuff.
