Everyone's hearing and room is different, so just turn it up to where it feels a touch loud and then turn it down about 25%.
Viola! A common sense approach, much like the "once you notice the compression, effect, or EQ, turn it down a notch" philosophy. Or "once you notice the proximity effect, back off that darn mic".
Now, if you're recording for a public event, give it a whirl at silly high volumes and check out those subwoofers. Otherwise, it's probably going to a computer or TV, won't it? _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Best advice yet Lance- _________________ The Blog:

Acoustics are counter-intuitive. If one thing is certain about acoustics, it is that if anything seems obvious it is probably wrong. |

threadjack...
This reminds me of a comic I saw recently but I can't find it anywhere. It had 3 panels I believe showing the different types of engineers. The "Good" engineer explained how 11 was an arbitrary number that means nothing, blah blah blah. The "Best" engineer said "I can build you one that goes to 12!".
Wish I could find it! _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.
