With me it's payment in advance (usually PayPal) for new clients unless they're referred by someone I trust. Most other clients I put "Terms: Due upon receipt" on the invoice and expect them to pay around 30 days. Many pay early (God love 'em). If they're waiting 30 days to get THEIR money, then it will take longer. With big company clients or clients with lots of invoices, I've found it's helpful to send a statement at the first of the month saying: "Here is a list of invoices I find open at this time...". It keeps things clear and appears to be motivational.

If this client becomes a slow pay and gentle reminders at 35, 45 and 55 days don't work, just have a friend send them a reminder from "Guido's Collections and Crime Scene Cleanup Service".

Since we're sharing stiffed and moneyed stories....I invoice once a month, payment due 25 days, and send reminders when I realize a client is way in arrears. I got burned once by a former co-worker, who hired me to voice a spot for one of his clients to whom he was selling radio time. I've seen him a couple of times since (this happened several years ago) and would you believe he said "I'll get that money to you as soon as my guy pays." Yeah, right. I got half-burned by a company that was folded into another division. When that happened, it owed me for a second part of the project ("People judge you by the words you use..."). I submitted email threads of scripts and a cd of completed audio to the lawyers handling the transition (bankruptcy)but no dice. Given those two instances, I consider myself lucky. Haven't seriously considered PayPal but I suppose if it presents itself as the way to go, I'll be on it.
