Tangential FYI - not only is charging extra for using a credit card illegal in many US states, it's a violation of the VISA/Mastercard merchant agreement.

OK... now I've got a scenario for you all.
Suppose there is a rate 'structure' in place that is broken down thusly: up to 10 minutes of finished audio for $XXX, 11 - 15 minutes for $XXY, 16 - 20 minutes for $XYY and so forth.
A prospective client says he'll be doing 10 to 12 videos, each being 1.5 to 2 minutes in length and wants a rate.
Do we quote our minimum for each of those 2-minute scripts, or do we say there could be some cost savings if the client delivers ALL the scripts at the same time?
OR...
Suppose we quote the minimum for each of those scripts and the client says, "Could I expect a reduced rate if I delivered all the scripts at the same time?"
We want to charge what we're worth; certainly. But in today's economy, we also don't want to risk losing jobs.

UK in joke. My suggestion was based on one infamous budget airline over here. Fly to (insert destination) for £4.99. When you try to book that's where the add ons ADD ON. Two recent ideas from the boss were to get passengers to pay to use the toilets and to have aircraft with areas for passengers to travel standing. No I am not joking! |

wow, Kafer, that's an interesting tidbit. Was at the DMV with my husband last week and they had a little homemade sign on each desk stating that they do charge a percentage if you use a credit/debit card to pay them. My guess is b/c they're a state agency, it's not illegal in FL... but my, that would be interesting if it was.
sorry for continuing the threadjack. _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

I will frequently make an offer like that. I'm happy to treat five 2-minute VOs as a single 10-minute project and bill accordingly, just as long as I'm able to knock off the whole thing on my timetable as opposed to getting the material in dribs and drabs. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Thanks all for your support. The same thing happened laast night I got an email to read 1056 words for a training video for Amazon. They wanted me to read, edit and produce the read for $200. I emailed him bck saying that I'd be happy to help them, but if they wanted 'production' I can do it for $250 and the reply came back favourably. _________________ https://www.darrenaltman.com/

Thanks Stef. I'm not a bread-head by any means, but judging by the rates that you guys posted at the front of this thread, I think I'm only trying bring my fee in line with what should be paid.
Do you have anything like a rate-sheet or guidelines in the US for all the different reads we have to do? _________________ https://www.darrenaltman.com/

Good discussion. Does anyone besides DB give discounts for volume? _________________ Enjoy life, this is not a rehearsal.

Kitzie,
I do, at least sort of. Some of my very, very frequent clients get a rate that is below what I would charge for a "one time" client. _________________ Be well,

Hey Bob, nice to see you here again. I'm renegotiating rates with a client, last time I did this was 2 years ago. They want rates per finished minute, but if they have a lot for me to do I'll probably adjust down a bit. Do you have any thoughts on rates per finished minute? _________________ Enjoy life, this is not a rehearsal.

Kitzie,
I do them as seldom as possible, but do adjust the rate for lots of work vs. little work. _________________ Be well,

Yes. Depends on the client of course, but the more you buy, the cheaper the unit cost gets. |

I do a fair bit of e-learning narration, usually longer pieces with 40 - 80 page scripts. To date, my quoting process for these has been somewhat haphazard and I'm always scratching my head to figure out what to put down on paper. This thread has been very helpful in offering some ideas on how to quote per finished minute (or minutes) of audio. But one question I still have:
How do you handle revisions? Not massive revisions but dinky little script changes that each take very little time to fix but which can add up?
Do you include a certain level or number of revisions in your original quote?
Hit them again for a minimum each time there's a change?
Something I haven't thought of?
Thanks!
