People do seem fond of this mic but I'm mystified as to why. I have a deep dislike of the pinched in, nasal, lower mid lacking thing. Despite anything Neumann hint at, it sounds nothing like a U87 and it's also way too bright for my taste.

Of course it may suit your voice and room very well, but I'm in love with me Lawson.

Sorry for the acidic tone. I don't know what came over me. Seriously!

GREAT voices sound good on ANY mic.
I've heard some great VO on TLM-103s.

Dayo, you're skating on thin ice, Mate.

Lizden, my sincere apologies for bashing your mic - and in such an oafish way.

I think I forgot how attached we get to mics. They become like an extension of ourselves don't they? After all, we talk to the things like friends most days.

Anyway I just checked and apparantly, I have NOT been appointed global arbiter of good taste, so my comments were simply the ravings of my own bitterness. FWIW, I had a gorgeous vintage U-87. Sold it in a sticky patch and regretted it seconds later. I bought the TLM in a hopeless attempt to re-capture the same vibe.

And I've clearly spent far too much time in more abrasive corners of the web lately.

Again, my apologies.

I landed my best repeat client with a TLM 103.

Don't have it anymore (but I'm a recovering gear maniac which means many mics have passed through my hands)

Lotsa pros seem to be getting the job done with a TLM 103.

In fact, this voiceover article is very pro-TLM 103

http://procommss.com/wordpress/tag/tlm103

(Since this article compares the 103 to another well-known mic, let it be known I'm not intending to mic-bash in a different direction....)

What's wrong with a little mic bashing? It's only opinions.

Which is why I mostly avoid "Mic Fights," because the findings are generally based on opinions and faith based reliance on what someone else said or had done. You'll never know how it's going to sound until you get it home and plug it in.

As for my 103 it sits in my mic locker, unused for months.

Mine was about a year old, sold it on ebay for around $700.

During that year it more than earned it's keep.

People are quite devoted to their gear sometimes, and it's easy enough to prevent hurt feelings and rancor by not bashing.

It's also easy enough to render an opinion without bashing. We're communicators, let us be civil also.

On the ProComm web site
Quote:
“When it comes to microphones we prefer the Neumann TLM103”.

There have been many posts about finding the microphone that is right for your own voice. I believe that getting a right match is a good thing.

If then that statement about the right match is true and agreed on how can any engineer say with any authority that one microphone is better than another. A good audio recordist in a commercial production shop should have a goodly selection of microphone from which to pick.

I suspect the TLM 103 has a place, as do the U87, the U47 (type) and the ELMA 251/ C12 (type) need to be there as well. Throw in a short shotgun and a Shure SM 58/57 and you will have fair microphone locker.

In a real recording studio the locker will be well stocked and the engineer will do some experimenting to find the right microphone for the occasion and the proper placement.

In closing If they prefer the TLM 103 they should record their voice with a TLM 103, otherwise they need to see what the customer/talent likes best.

I will stick with my tube Peluso 22-251, AKG 414 EB and SM 57.
