My fav mag! I like the vitals page and the cartoons too even though some of them are kind of rank. And I really mean this when I say I get it for the articles and not the pictures, I can't remember the last time I even looked at a centerfo.....oh wait. Nevermind.

Do you need compression and or EQ on the way in?

I have too much "room tone" at the moment. I have plans to further enclose the Camp Cooper recording area—solid walls, floated floor, etc), but I need to be sure my builder can make it happen. I suppose I could do it myself, but I'd rather have a frame made by someone who does it all the time, ya know?

In the mean time, I have some spiffy mics that need a better preamp/strip than Ye Olde Symeterix 528 not even E. I have been using the comp/expander setting to make a gentle gate to keep the room from infesting all parts of my recordings, but I have grown less and less tolerant of any noise's mere existence, and I also want hissless fidelity.

I'm trying out a 416 and have discovered that it needs a kick in the high end for my voice, otherwise it sounds "boomy" according to my chief producer. In the other thread in this forum about EQ I said I send everything flat; when I start using the 416 more, I'll be tweaking the upper end of the 416's signal.

I'm on the hook with Mercenary. A few emails and I already love those guys.

For EQ, I just use the Graphic EQ in AA3 and annihilate everything below 50Hz, and leave the 80 and 100Hz region alone. That brings the noise floor waaaaaaay down. The compander in AA is great too - set it for no compression and a -50db threshold and the thing becomes a transparent expander.

But yes, if you're going to go for a pre upgrade anyhow might as well go for a big ol' channel strip.

However, throw $500 of bass traps and panels from a company like GIK or RealTraps in your room and you won't have to rebuild anything (and probably won't need a channel strip).

Deirdre:

The original 528 is known to be superior than the 528e.
The boominess of the 416 is likely your room, as it is not generally considered a bass heavy mic. Feel free to send me a file and I'll give you my 2 cents.
Also, place it above or to the side of your mouth, pointed toward it, but don't face it directly. That should clear it up a bit.

I am doing more studio designs these days than ever. As I do more, I get faster and it gets easier. I could put some basic plans together for you...

Sweet. It needs service any how— some of the pots are scratchy. We talked about re-capping it at some point— I just need to get thru the time of NOT having it!

I will send you a file of the 416, and oh yes I do talk past the end of it, not into it.

Thank you!

I sure as heck don't know where I's put bass traps. My room has no unoccupied corners.

As far as I could tell the best position for a 416 is .....

Whereas for a U87 it's this ...

My thanks to the lovely Annabelle for taking a break from her cleaning duties to (a) make me a cup of tea and (b) take this photo.

Philip, why bother with the pop screens at this point with your mics safely out of pop zones?

Dierdre, I recommend a dbx286a as a backup/replacement for the 528. Can be found for just over $200, and works scary good.

Thanks for the input, folks. These folks at Mercenary, Mary, they'd actually shoot me a Telefunken to try out?

You can talk to my man BT, (Bill Thomas)...the midwest rep for Mercenary and find out for sure. BT is one knowledgeable guy, voiceover friendly, and extremely helpful. Tell him "the Captain" sent you.

I found a new AT 3060, same as my old one (...or so I thought) from a dealer in LA. After ordering and paying, he informed me he had none left and AT had discontinued the model. I already knew that, and thought I'd found one of the last few remaining. So, he agreed to substitute an AT 4033. The brown truck shows up today, I plug it in, fire up the phantom power on my pre...and nuthin. First I think, it's my pre. So I run a new cable to my mixer, fire up the phantom power and...nuthin. Then I pull out an old Nady and an Apex 435 I had stashed away...they worked fine on all tests.

A new AT 4033 was shipped out from Ohio this afternoon, and the dealer, the AT rep and I are all like, "Huh?" A new AT product right out of the box and it's dead?

Full moon.

The price on that pre is pretty good, too. Got a feeling before the year's out my accountant's gonna be on me to buy more sh*t. Is it really that good?

The 286A is the perfect, modestly priced channel strip. Designed for voice
with nice compression if you want it, and a great expander.
I have a $500 pre (Grace), and a $900 strip (Pro Announcer) and the DBX is every bit as good for VO.
