The best I've ever sounded to myself was in a pro recording studio here with a U87 well over 12 inches above and away from my head, much like the pictures we've seen of PB's set up. The room was about 6' x 9' (plenty of room for two) cloth covered walls, and the mic fed into a Manley Vox Box preamp. Rich, full, clean, wonderful....crappy copy, but the voice sounded great to me.

Lance

Embarrassed Got the wrong conversion tool.

Still wouldn't you agree that at 15.7 inches the U87 should shound very very good.

Thanks

Wrong conversion tool - reminds me of the 17" high Stonhenge figure that was meant to be 17' in This is Spinal Tap. Smile

I agree with your point on the U87 should be fine at 15"...but people perhaps are used to and like the intimacy of a dynamic mic at closer range. I suggested that I switch to my e935 dynamic for a long-time e-learning client, and sent him a sample. He said no thanks because it sounded so much "richer and fuller" than my mid-range condensers I had been using so he didn't want to change it up.

On the contrary, Philip, I feel you're quite a fine instructionisist. Perhaps if the VO thing doesn't pan out, you can take up full-time video instructionising. After all, it's just talking into a camera.

Love it, Phil. Yes, I like putting them thar Newmans way up like that, too.
If the room sounds good, it's the way to go for natural sound. Too many work these mics too close, too often. Was that too much?
Did your camera have an audio input, or did you go "double system" and sync the lips manually?

Did the double and in the edit muted the cam audio which is dreadful and dropped in the voice track.

I wish there was a Neumann MrT model so when Voice Overists lean in so they can "work that mic" the mic shouted at them...

"Back off FOOL!"
