Yes, it is a HUGE improvement. It took a little critical listening, to figure out it was early refection and the plywood walls resonating that was causing all the problems.

Like I tell everyone, in a small room you need to kill everything with absorption (fiberglass or rockwool) there is no other way to do it. And here is the proof.
Chris now sounds clean and present on the mic. When you A & B his original sample, with these now ones, the difference is striking. Which proves another rule: "Condenser mics only sound as good as the room they are in."

Some hard work, and Chris now sounds fantastic.

GOOD JOB!!!

Thanks! I'm delighted that it wasn't a lost cause after all! And it's great to have so many talented and resourceful people on this forum!

Ethan Winer (from Real Traps) commented on the clips on Gearslutz: "All of the clips sound fine to me. No obvious ringing or boomy tone. Maybe a bit thin sounding overall, though that's fine if there will be music mixed in underneath in the final production."

I wonder if I'm getting diminishing returns with too many bass traps squeezed into a small booth. As I add more traps the bass response gets stronger, BUT everything starts sounding a little more closed and phasy. Right now, the first clip (no wall/ceiling traps) sounds best to my ears...a little more open. Does this make any sense?

If a thin sound is the issue, go check out my SP CS5 vs. TLM 103 thread. A mic switch will beef things right up.

Here's a new configuration. I took out the small traps and hiked up the rear bass trap to ceiling level and spaced it 4" from the back. The front trap is still on the floor but now spaced away from the wall and slightly straddles one corner. This sample isn't as close mic'd as the others. Maybe it's a happy medium.

The next thing I'm gonna try is raising the front trap to ceiling height...and filling in a little more fiberglass (on the ceiling).

Here's one last configuration: I raised the front trap to the ceiling (as the rear one) and replaced all the remaining foam with fiberglass (ceiling, too). Attached a new sample and some pics.

that sounds good. A little hot on the gain but other than that it sounds good overall. It's all going to be personal preference from here on out. You have cured the issues and it's a matter of tweeking till you like what you hear. When you like it...it will be perfect. It is an ongoing thing. You will tweek here and there as you learn and understand more.
Glad it all worked out for you.

Using Fuzz Measure I took readings of my booth and listening area (for the first time). But need some help interpreting the results.
Used the U87ai and Yamaha MSP53A monitors.

Booth pic and measurement:

Mic is 9 inches from the monitor.

Listening area (which is untreated):

Looks pretty erratic which is why I monitor with headphones mostly.

The first chart looks good.

The second chart the room bass traps and treatment.

Do you have "waterfalls" for these tests?

The first chart is a good example of what bass trapping will to for you.
The real test would be to do the test again with out the treatment, and to move the monitor further away.

Thx again, Mike!

Yeah, I wish i would've run charts before adding all the new treatment. But not gonna disassemble everything now. Smile

I can't use the 'waterfall' plug-in unless I register the aHobo Tounge ($150). Worth it?
I could also try using RoomEQWizard but not sure how to run it with one monitor.

Oh, I had the U87 set to cardiod pattern for the last graph....here's what it looks like with an omni-pattern (which might be more accurate):

I have Nu Gen's Visualizer which has some fancy features.

Still looks good.

Percentage wise tuning a listening room does not generally require as much absorption as does a small recording area.

Bass Trapping in all the corners and about 50% of the wall space.

I bought a license for FuzzMeasure so here's two new graphs...mic set to cardioid, speaker 9-10 inches from mic.

I can also post reverb time data if needed...EDT, T20, or T30. Not sure what that all means.

Thx!

Here are the reverb charts, but need some interpretation:

I just looked at your waterfall; your duration is to short.
You need to plot it at half a second or longer.
I thing you're set at 5 milliseconds now.

A longer time will revel the decay, that's whet we are really looking for.
