But some mics better for different things. Same as Tiger Woods uses different sticks for different strokes.

If you're a Voice Overist that tends to be untrue, were it really the case you'd have a mic for each of the following vowels, consonants, aspirates and presumably for talking a pile o' sh*te too .... That'll be yer 416 again |

I default to the UMT-70 for announcing/narration, or the C-1 or U87 for character voices and "live action" movie-style ADR. Easy!

Most ladies do not sound very good on the 416. I've found the the UMT-70 sets the voice on top of the mix like the 416 with the deliciousness of the M7 capsule. |

lol, I was thinking a little less detailed. Like mics that air, or mics that add presence for certain applications.

I find this interesting too. Choosing between mics so far apart in quality. Is there a certain "I don't know what" that the C1 has that you prefer on occasion to the U87? _________________ Mandarin Chinese Voiceovers & Localization

Rode NTG-3. Couldn't tell the difference between it and the 416. _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

I would say for some of us we have maybe one "go to" mic, and a couple of others that are useful at times, but not used as often. |

Sylvia Villagran uses a 416, speaking of women...

I like the NTG-3, too... _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Actually, Ann Dewigg uses a Lawson. She talks about it in part two of an interview with radio producer Ryan Drean:

Part I

Part II

She even mentions her dissatisfaction with shotgun mics.

However, another one of my favorite female talent, Rene Marie Villano, does use a 416 and loves it. |

Yup. Rena Marie does use a 416. I work with her several times every week. Sounds great on her. She was using a Rode NT-1 and an NTG-1 for her portable before.

She was a big fan of that AT-835B that I was using for awhile. _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

Actually on my RCA BA-31 and my Neve 1272, my C1s sound very close to the U87. The C1 can be a bit brighter to the U87, and the U87 is more mature in sound.

As a matter of fact the TLM103 has it rough edges taken off with these two pres as well as with a Avalon 737.

The C1 & U87 are used mostly for character work. I like them both equally for own individual charms. _________________ The Blog:
