Mary, I think the NTK has a warm, dark sound that is perhaps too much like your AT4047 to justify the expense. If you love how the -103 sounds with your voice, I think you should wait and buy it instead.

I bought my TLM-103 used from eBay for $650.....

Tom,

I forgot all about e-bay. Thank you for bringing it up!
I saw quite a few Neumann's listed there. If I did decide to purchase a used mic what else would I need? Some don't come with shock mounts, and most don't say anything about cords or mic stands (I have one for my audio technica, can it be used for the Neumann too?)

Thank you!
Mary

Yes, the same mic cable and stand you use for the AT4047 will work with the Neumann. Speaking of which, are you using a good-quality cable (like Mogami), or just a free cable that came with the mic as a throw in? Good mic cables are worth the extra dough - get the shortest length that works for you.

A TLM-103 does need a shock mount, which is absurdly expensive when purchased separately. It'd be best if you buy one that has a shock mount. I however use an M600 rigid mic mount, which works on practically all my mics, so I don't need to worry about switching out shock mounts all the time when using my varied mics. (It's $300, and may not be the best use of your limited funds right now, but the Neumann shock mount is something like $175 new...).

George,

The Don LaFontaine Voice Over Lab is genius. I so wish I could be there for it September 2nd but it's not going to work out. It's just not fair!!

Thanks again though for your advice.

Mary

Hey George -

Thanks for the heads up on the Dell Mini 10! According to the Dell website, it can be had in 3 or 4 different variations. Any recommendation as to which one would be most suitable? I think I want one.

Now... If only other stuff would quit breakin' or wearin' out.

One car needs an altercator and some kinda battering and the back fence is kinda wobbly and looking a bit weary these days. Colorado is beautiful, but when the winds come roaring down the mountain from CC's cabin, fences and garbage cans may end up in the next county!

I do recommend the Dell Mini 10 with the "HD" display, sometimes with the regular display the bottom of windows get cut off annoyingly.
Otherwise, pick your poison. They all have the same stuff where it counts.

I have the MicPort Pro, which I ordered from George and heard about from Dan Lenard earlier this year. So easy to use and great to travel with as well. I have a Vista-equipped computer. The MicPort Pro is terrific.
