The NT1a and the Heil PR40 are the only mics I have owned for six months or less ('nuff said). The Heils are tremendous instrument mics, and bizzare vocal mics. Throw 'em on the pile with the other failed dynamic broadcasting offerings that have come out lately from Neumann, Rode, etc. I use a e935 for a dynamic mic now. For the money, I like almost all of the Studio Projects mics...all of them. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

The B1 is a warmish sounding mic compared to other $100 mics.
I think the NT1A has better clarity.
But, Phillip probably gave the best advice. Until you're ready to spend $1000+, you won't get a big "wow" effect.
Even though I have a Neumann TLM-193 and a Sennheiser 416 I wouldn't hesitate to voice a commercial on a B1 or NT1A for one of my regular clients. Wouldn't make a huge difference.

Thanks again, guys. "Get a mic and get busy..." Yeah, I know, Bill.
Whatever I choose at this level, I'll find a way to make it work for me. You have all been very kind and incredibly helpful. I really appreciate it.

Mark,
For what it's worth, I used a B1 until (as I look at my records) just about a year ago. There was nothing wrong with the B1. It's just that I had heard enough good things about the C1 and an opportunity came to grab one at a good price, so I did. I use it almost exclusively now just because it was a step up from the B1, if only in terms of cost.
I could have sworn I had a B1 vs C1 test file of my own here, but I can't find it. In any event, there's really not much difference in sound to my ears, although there are subleties. But if my C1 ever crapped out and I had to use my B1 for a job, I probably wouldn't even bother telling my clients because I'd be willing to bet they couldn't tell the difference.
Incidentally, I'm in MA, too, on the South Shore. If you're in the area and want to do your own A/B (or C/B I guess) test, let me know and maybe we can work something out here, or at your place.

I used to have a prototype A1 but it was kinda too saucy for my vox. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

If you get to NYC you should try Dale Pro Audio - you have to make an a t. but they'll set you up in a room with about a dozen or so mics for you to try out - You can ask them to record it to CD. Much easier to decide when you can hear yourself on them. |

They're a pleasure to deal with - I got both my mics there along most of my other stuff. They cater to pros so it's a totally different experience from the Guitar Center or other consumer stores. |

I had been plugging the merits of the C1 for about three years. I love mine; the B1 is just not as bright, probably better for a sibilant prone VO. _________________ The Blog:

Acoustics are counter-intuitive. If one thing is certain about acoustics, it is that if anything seems obvious it is probably wrong. |
