The levels and sound have definitely improved, and again, Frank, your suggesiton of changing to the - 10db made a big difference--you de man, dude...----and since to connect to the -10dbv line on the Duet you have to use straight XLR cable, I think that (as opposed to the XLR out from the pre-amp to 1/4 inch into the MOTU Ultralite---which we don't know for sure is balanced----the MOTU inputs are balanced, -10/+4 dbV, but the XLR out 1/4 inch in cable I'm not so sure about) might be responsible for at least some of the improvement....the other part being apparently that the Apogee Duet plays better with Garage Band than with Amadeus.
Regarding the bass roll-off, it seems to be working fine....do you like to use it, or not? |

I do not use an RE-20. But if I did I would not use the roll-off. Adding or padding bass tends to make the mic sound muddy - microphones do not play well in the mud.
Using a dynamic microphone such as the RE-20 may also be PART of the problem... not because it is dynamic, but because you need a lot of gain on many dynamics - which is why I suggest a mixer in-line for easier tweaking between microphones. Making sure you do not have Phantom Power on with the dynamic mic is also a necessity.
Check your cables.
'Nuff said.

My Apogee Duet has a -10dbvu(?) option via XLR (my current connection has been XLR line out from my pre-amp to 1/4 inch/balanced into Apogee Duet) |
I shoulda mentioned this to you while we spoke the other day.
The Duet 1/4" inputs are for guitars and other low output signals ONLY. That's why when you send line level signal into those inputs, you are clipping like mad. You should use the XLR inputs when feeding it a mic or line level signal.
Run your 737 XLR out into an XLR in of the Duet, and in the Maestro control panel set the corresponding input to Line +4. It will make ALL the difference! _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

That is true on the MOTU and most other audio interfaces, but NOT on the Apogee Duet.
Apogee did something REALLY annoying, making the 1/4" inputs unbalanced, instrument level, high impedance inputs ONLY. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Thanks George...I actually still get a very low level through the +4 dbv line into the Apogee, but better levels with the -10dbV line........ |
