What did I write? The names in the title are two talking newspapers for the deaf, recorded by volunteers every week in a small studio in Banff Castle. This evening I was one of the readers and it was a nerve racking experience.
I went from narrating a TV documentary on the Israeli/Palestinian situation, then after a short drive found myself, as one of the more experienced volunteers put it, reading the newspaper to my grannie. No rehearsals, no re-takes, just one presenter and 3 readers doing something that to some people in the Baff and Turriff area really makes a difference.
Will I do it again? Too right! |

Now, as a talking newspaper for the deaf, did you have to read it really, really loud? Careful. You could snap a vocal chord doing that. '

It's funded by the money raised to provide Meeting withdrawal therapy for unemployed middle managers, the idea never caught on. I'm told blind/partially sighted people are allowed to listen to the talking newspapers as well; although how they ask the deaf person for a copy wasn't made clear to me.
On a serious note, it was a great experience, very nice people too. |

I know a guy here in NY that does it for the Jewish Guild for the Blind - they have a program called InTouch. He says there are lots of actors there that do it, too. He loves it.

This will definitely date me, but one of my favorite memories was reading the evening paper for the radio for the blind in San Diego. My wife at the time, a writer and literature buff, joined me one time and decided to take on the sports section and kept referring to Super Bowl X, and I mean X not Ten, and called the basketball team the Boston Celtics (with a K as you would in the UK). I tried to gently correct her on the air. THAT went over well.

All right.....I'm marking myself as ignorant here, but how the hell does a deaf person benefit from a talking paper?????? That to me, is like putting braille on the keypad of the drive through ATM. That is another one that has always baffled me. Why do we drive on parkways and park on driveways?
Why are they called APARTments when they're all together? Why is it called a PAIR of pants when it's only one? Why, if something is delivered by car it's called a SHIPment, but something delivered by ship is called CARgo?
Why are there parking lots at bars when it's illegal to drink and drive?
Just some of lifes little baffling mysteries. I'm not trying to offend anyone, but I honestly can't see how talking papers help someone who can't hear? Blind yes.....deaf no. _________________ TG2
