Could call the article the "myth buster". No mention of THE LA MIC - MKH416 and most of the work voiced via ISDN.

So to become more God like one doesn't need an MKH416 but one does need ISDN. You're allwed to disagree if you are more successful than DLF Laugh

That's hilarious! They should rename that to THE LA MIC.

D.L carries that mic with him wherever he goes. An engineer friend of mine had a session with him and he brought the mic to use. Nevermind the pre-amp settings were set for a different mic, but oh well.

No mention of any mic except one, this is what I read:

"LaFontaine usually reads into a Manley tube mic, which runs into a Tube-Tech MEC-1A preamp. He records his vocals “flat,” with little to no compression, letting the clients add any necessary processing during the mix."

They don't mention the other usual mics so there's no basis on which your claim can be substantiated.

Such posting usually have a sound effect to accompany them; it's from The Charlie Brown cartoons and it's of Linus having his blanket snatched away. Laugh

A converted electrical room in the bottom floor of LaFontaine's house serves as a 6×5-foot vocal booth;

That may be my favorite part of the article as I relaized that the "VOICE OF GOD" comes from the Basement! Laugh

Yes, but Ernie Anderson of ABC television (Mr. "Luuuuvv Boat") used to carry a Sennheiser 416 with him to sessions and he did all right, and I guarantee you a ton of DLF's earlier sessions in other studios were done on LA 416. Now that he can afford a $4,500 mic and a pre-amp in the same price range, more power to him (like he needs it). Yes, there are better mics than the 416 if you can afford them, but it's a nice item to have in your tool chest.

By the way, I did a session in another studio on a Neumann U89, a pricier version of the U87, and the sound was terrible to my ears. I imagine much can go wrong between the mic and the end product. Even a Manley Gold mic can sound like crap if the pre-amp or processing are sub par. The old saying: A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

It's all about "image". Don likes the image of being - - 'Don'. The article also mentioned doing the limo thing for many years. It was his trademark, and his image... What's Yours?

The question is why HD... it is great for DVD's, but audio HD for a VO Talent? When the world is stuck on 44,100 kHz, where and whom are you going to send HD audio to - and Why?

Can you "voice" HD Audio? In 5:1, with your voice alone? Do people hear your audio with five ears?

Definititon of HD Audio: 108dB SNR. DVD-Audio at 24-bit/192kHz in stereo or 24-bit/96kHz in 5.1 surround.

Notice the article mentions why DLF uses the HD Avid, DigiDesign equipment... he likes to dabble in video...

Read the article for what it is... not for the hype of DLF, and you will gain a better perspective on the world of 'gollywood". Buzz-words are marvelous things in the hands of the media. But does the article ever state or even elude - that DLF is using HD in his little VO booth for doing what DLF does? The article is the very best of 'spin' on someone who does not need the 'spin', written by someone who doesn't know beans about VO work or how to do it.

The article is also a very good sales piece for DigiDesign/Avid... how much is DLF getting from the spinoffs from VO folks running around trying to BE Don LaFonataine?

If you are in awe of DLF, learn the why and how Don did and does his thing, then create the 'image' that is appropriate for you.

Remember: Don isnt any better or worse than you or I, he just has the right 'spin' and the media machine to back up what he does.

I may have read the article wrong, but I got the idea that the HD stuff was for his video hobby. That must me quite a conversation he has with himself. Let's say he just shot a home movie to send to family and friends. "Gosh", he says, "in a w o r l d where people send movies...who will I get to do the narraion? Oh! I'll get ME!"

That Comedian is pretty good. When Don passes on I guess we now know who his replacement will be. Wink

If you guys really believe they sound the same, I've got 30 acres of ice in the warmer regions of Alaska I'm willing to sell cheap.

Go back and listen to the Keanu Reeve's character, it's much closer to the original.

I think that Pablo was dealing with a "movie trailer voice type" rather than trying to sound like a particular artist. He succeeds in creating THAT sound. To be fair there are a few on this board who are able to do that too, the only difference is they have no sense of humour about it.
