Pam, I was in your shoes in early 2000 and I took that blessed time and the severance package to evaluate and move ahead. Have a little chocolate, take some nice walks in scenic places and try new things. You'll be amazed at where that takes you.

Thanks everyone. I'm so looking forward to this new chapter in my life. I'm giving myself a few days to unwind and be with my family at a friends wedding and then I'll get my brain going in the new direction. I'd decided to break from this day job in September when I had the thought after a blown on camera audition "thank heavens I have my day job". That thought stopped me cold when I realized I was holding myself back. And like you said Diane, I've been falling back for years. No more. Now I have nothing standing in my way. Here we go...it's gonna be a great ride. Wink

Finally! Somebody to join me at Dairy Queen on weekday afternoons. Ice cream tastes better when everybody else is at work.

Scary but so exciting! I'm excited for you because I know you'll take over the world. What a strange thing - that you wanted to leave and stuck it out and are the better for it. Cheers!

I'm sure you'll do fine, good luck with the next leg of your life journey.

Just a quick story:

The same thing happened to me 8 years ago, in a different industry. At that time, I did the "long hard look" thing and went self employed. My day job's industry is probably as competitive and challenging as VO (if not more so) and looking back...I still don't know how I got this far.

I hope you have the same experience, time will tell.

Pam,

I was laid off in November with the rest of the production department, I can tell you there will be days of emotional stress where you're willing to look at the help wanted at the local McHooHah restaurant...

I've found it helpful to refer to myself as a freelancer now. Not unemployed. I have lunch meetings not just with friends, but with potential clients.

The severance and unemployment check can be a big help as you set up shop and get busy.

The universe provides, go get it.

Hey Pam:

Congratulations! I was laid off from my radio gig in September and the severance and unemployment have been a blessing. If you're going to get laid off, having it happen during these days of extended benefits is a help! Like Monk I never refer to myself as unemployed - I'm self-employed - and now that my focus is on being a full-time vo, more vo work comes in. I keep my hand in radio on the side freelancing - because I enjoy it - and the work I've been doing is far more interesting than what I was doing in radio before - ( i.e. I co-host Newsweek on Air for month long stints every few months - am doing all of May right now. That wouldn't have even been on my radar while I was comfy in my old radio gig. ) I still have a ways to go to get back to my old combined radio/vo income but tho' it's sometimes stressful with all of the doom and gloom economic news, it's also exciting realizing the ability to multiply your income is entirely within your own hands and you're not dependent upon a company to give you a small raise.

And a large part of what makes it exciting instead of nerve wracking is having the support of everyone here. You guys are great.

Congrats again Pam - 2009 will be a great year for you!

My full-time radio job was eliminated way back in January of 1997 and, like Monk and Melissa, I never referred to myself as unemployed. In fact, I never even applied for unemployment insurance even though I would have qualified.

Fortunately, while I was still working at the station I had a pretty strong suspicion that as the local group grew from 2 to 3 to 5 stations, jobs would be consolidated and mine was as likely as any to be eliminated despite my 18 years of service to the company. So I prepared myself to become a full-time freelancer once the axe inevitably fell.

So, for the past 12+ years I have referred to myself either as a "freelancer" or as "semi-retired," depending upon how good business is at the time.
