This is what Philip calls it— when a client asks you to name your rate, and then when it is higher/different from when they expect to pay, they counter with what they expect to pay.
I got this from a new production company client yesterday, and here's the capper— when I wrote to say I charge $X per each 250-word page with a negotiable discount after the first 5 pages, I got a call saying they pay $5X "per program", hope that's all right.
Sure! especially when you consider the biggest "program" will end up paying me the equivalent of $1.25X per page.

I have >Xn idea what you mean. Your getting more? Or you think you may be getting relatively more than less or is it more or less more when your less was least? |

Yeah, more or less.
Philip, I am surprised on you— you're a banker after all. Don't you speak Algebra?
1.25X is MORE than X.
Since the "program" is about 1000 words, I'd have charged them for 4 pages, but what they're paying is the equivalent of 5.
5/4 = 1.25.

I guess I don't understand the math. I would simply tell the inquiree "this is my rate" - period.
I am not a good negotiator - can you tell?

It works out like this:
Me: I'd charge you $800 for this job.
Them: Well, the job pays $1000.

Ahhhh, I told you I was not good at math.
I had a client this week say "How much would you charge for a national spot"?
I told him my rate and he said, "O.K. we will just give you double that rate"!
I didn't argue.
Much.
I think I mentioned I was not a good negotiator.

Amazing!
In my other "food on the table" occupation, this never happens. If I quote a client a fee, I have to be close to the market cuz if I'm under, NOBODY steps up to pay more. Of course, we are talking about 2 totally different industries.
Good on you, D...sounds like this client is a keeper.
