My original plan was to use a Focusrite Saffire for my upgrade. I went through 3 firewire cards and even with TI, NEC and LSI chipsets the unit would not communicate properly with the Saffire.

I ended up with the Lexicon U42S and it turned out to be a good move. A USB connected, 4 channel with 4 newly designed dbx preamps (same ones that are in the FW810S), HiZ inputs for instruments, Neutrik connectors, Midi interface, monitor outs, 24 bit 96k, a nice solid construction of aluminium (no plastic!), phantom power, an on an on.

Quite a difference and my sound is even quieter, smoother than before with the NTK mic and the 415... cuts like a knife.
This one gets a thumbs up from me.

Did ya ever give a thought to the fact it may have been the Saffire's problem, and not the computer connection????

I use a Firewire interface everyday without any problem from day one. (MOTU 828 MKII with ADA 8000 Lightpipe interface for 22 I/O)

The Lexicon is a good toy.

Toodles

That's what I deducted after trying several cards (even with the Focusrite recommended chipsets). It seems the inside Saffire works are finicky to say the least. I'm sure it sounds great as a few people here have said that are using them.

Your'e welky Bob!

Yes Frank...remember when you were trying to help me get my MOTU Traveler working and no matter what we did we couldn't get sound from it? It ended up being a defective unit. Once I exchanged it for a new one it was up and running right away. Defective gear happens.....causes alot of headaches before you discover the new unit is defective and nothing else is wrong. While I'm thinking about it....thanks again Frank for all that time you spent with me trying to get that working.
