Holy Crapola once again. Costco has an online deal for a 1.5 Terabyte external drive for $139.99 with a $30 rebate taken at "checkout":

Bruce et al,

If I'm considering picking up one of these, has anyone here tested any of them for reliability? I'm just nervous about quality at that price point. FWIW, my current audio data backup drive is an Iomega eGo 250GB, which has been rock-solid...

David,

I haven't used the 1.5 TB drives, but I have a 750 GB and a 500 GB drive from that same series of drives by Seagate that I use for back-ups and both have been rock solid for 3 and 2 years respectively.

Be sure you look into this first. These 1.5 GB drives from Seagate have had some firmware issues. I suggest you read the user reviews on www.newegg.com and perhaps google "Seagate 1.5 GB problems"

Seagate is normally at the top of my list for hard drives, but until/unless these issues have been resolved, I'd think twice. Also, if buying PC gear, ALWAYS check NewEgg first. They are the top-rated online computer retailer for good reason - great prices, extremely helpful user reviews from experienced users, fast shipping, great stock, etc.

Bob,
Thanks for the feedback. I checked Iomega this morning, too, and they are blowing out the USB 2.0 drives as it looks like everything is moving to firewire... Now I have to weigh the smaller Iomega drive (for only $68!) against this Tera-beast!

Glad to know the Seagate's are good! Thx!

EDIT: I forgot to ask about Mac compatibility... On the site, it only mentions PC formats. Hmmmm.

Also, FireWire is being phased out!!! I'm pretty sure I've read that the next gen Mac won't even have FW. Don't believe me, confirm independently, but I think I'm right about this.

USB 3.0 is coming out very soon, which may be why the 2.0 drives are being blown out.

Yeah, that same debate has been running over on the HR BBS for a while. I e-mailed Apple about it when I saw the new MacBooks didn't have FW ports and their response led me to believe that the FW protocol was still alive and well at Apple, but that they assumed folks who use FW the way we audio professionals do were more likely to buy a MacBook Pro. In any case, I've already got a FW-capable Mini and a Duet that occupies the FW port, so my storage options are stricly limited to USB 2.0.

I also don't use the storage drive for direct recording - i.e. I record to hard disk and make periodic backups just in case my hard drive ever dies. It also allows me to delete old projects from the hard drive, but have an archive copy in case I ever have to go back and reuse stuff from an old session.

Re: Newegg...

I used to be a loyal customer. Good products, great prices. Until...

I purchased an LCD monitor from them which Newegg touted offered a $50 rebate on top of the discounted price.

Oh, I received the monitor, still using it in fact. Problem is, I never got the rebate. When I called Newegg about the issue, they tersely informed me that this was a "manufacturer's rebate" and there was nothing they could do about it.

Here's the kicker. I have attempted to contact the manufacturer on several occasions to no avail. All I get is voicemail and no response.

I informed Newegg of this and the fact that THEY were underwriting this rebate offer and suggested if they were interested in retaining my business they would assist me in acquiring my rebate. Again, I was told there was nothing they could do about it. I then informed them they would not be receiving any more orders from me and that there was "nothing I could do about it". I haven't purchased from them since.

It became far less about the rebate than the shoddy customer service I received. Too bad.

Oh yeah, the manufacturer of the monitor = SOYO. I'll never buy another of their products either.

Tiger Direct http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=4306125&sku=TSD-1000H4 has an Hitachi 1 TB drive for $89.00.

Prices are dropping as SATA takes over.
