|
|
Hi all,
I hope nobody minds a software question not directly related to VO work.
I do sound design for local theaters. For foley work, I use my ProTools setup (I got some great "falling down stairs" sounds for a production of "Noises Off" using a yoga mat, a bookshelf, and a suitcase!). For putting stuff together into tracks, I use Adobe Audition 1.5.
For the show I'm currently working on, I need a track with some music that's supposedly playing from a phonograph. I've used Audition to remove clicks and pops, but what I'd like to do with the music I downloaded is add clicks and pops, since the tracks are "clean," and the music is supposedly coming from a record on a turntable.
Previously, I used the distortion tool in Audition for a radio track, and it worked pretty well, especially since the track was mostly at a low volume. But for this application, a) the distorted sound isn't quite right for clicks and pops on an old vinyl record, and b) the distortion tool seems to only modify "active" waveforms: when the wave is flat (as between songs), there's no distortion.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to make a clean audio track sound like it's coming from an old 12" round piece of vinyl?
(And for you young 'uns, "12" round piece of vinyl" refers to a "record," something that we used to record music onto back when dinosaurs roamed.)
Thanks,
Rich |

Rich,
Izotope has a free plug-in called Vinyl. It will do what you want, and it's free. Here's the link: http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/vinyl/ _________________ Be well,

I just sent some SFX to your email below. Hopefully it's what you're looking for.

Thanks guys! I'll check out the plug-in and the sound files this afternoon.
Not even a half-hour after I posted. I haven't been active here for awhile, but you've reminded me very quickly of why this is such a great place!
Cheers,

That Izotope Vinyl plug rocks... it'll even add hum thus making it sound like a poorly earthed record cartridge and there's an adjustable factor of record wear and cue burn (or however you'd want to call it). You can even decide whether your "vinyl" is running at 45, 33 or 78 rpm... I think it will suit your needs! |

Thanks all, the Izotope plug-in worked great!
My only complaint is that I think the scratches break up the sound a little too much; my recollection is that most record scratches that don't cause actual skipping don't really break up the sound, there's just an audible "click" as the needle tracks over it. But that's a minor quibble, and using only one scratch and keeping the volume on the scratch slider at a moderate level seemed to work well.
So thanks again, and thanks for the SFX track Bruce, I may use it in the future.
Cheers,

Pam,
I agree. And Mandy, you're so very right. In this case, however, I was using bacon in the metaphorical sense, not the gustatory. (i.e.: My own hind end, substantial as it is,) _________________ Be well,
