I am very tempted to get a KSM27 at the moment, just because its being discontinued, that along with the current prices being pretty low already, shops are dumping the KSM27's for bargain bin prices. Although, the US price is half of Taiwan's prices and Musicians Friend etc do not ship electronics here.

I haven't gotten a reply about the 286A price yet, but the Joe Meek threeQ is more in my price range than the Six Q.

I'd love to get a Mackie or Soundcraft desk sometime. I see the Yamaha MG as being in the same range as Behringer or Phonic though.

My use of the compressor while recording is like a soft limiter, not for effects purposes. I use it only to control unexpected peaks, so I can get a better signal level without clipping. So, 99% of the voice is still unprocessed.

Agreed. Most of my cables are decent quality cabling that I make myself to get the exact lengths needed. I opt for good cables without going into the audiophile "Emperor's New Cables" area.
Edo, that is very interesting. I wondered, as my second language is a mixture of Dutch and English, so I find I can usually read a fair amount of Dutch. And now I finally know where Aruba is (I have an English class that always want that as their team name.)

Looking at some pre-amp options. The Joe Meek Three-Q, Studio Projects VTB-1 and the DBX 286A all look like good options. Has anybody had a chance to compare any of these?

| Out of the three I have been extensively using the DBX 286A (works great on a number of mics!), alas no experience with the other two, but I found this review on the VTB1... and this one on the Joe Meek. Hope it helps. |

I have the 286 and the ThreeQ sitting in front of me now. They are both
very good, with preamps among the best for under $500.
The 286 advantage is a high pass filter and an excellent expander.
The ThreeQ advantage is a real good EQ which allows you to tune a mic for a particular voice or sound. I use the ThreeQ most of the time.
You'd be happy with either one. The preamps sound about as good as my
Grace 101 ($600).

Thanks. I was hoping to hear good things about the threeQ. Mainly because the 286 is out of stock in the country, and I am itching for new toys.
About the ThreeQ. This was actually a thread I wanted to start a while ago just for interest sake. DBX compressors are known for their signature DBX sound. Some love and some hate their colouration. How do they translate on voice-over work?

I was waiting for payday to go pick up a ThreeQ, and looking around for some 2nd hand units. I came across a Presonus Studio Channel for a little more than a new ThreeQ. Are these any good? Having the words "studio" and "channel" in the name was NOT a good idea for googleability!!!
Seems I just missed out on a Grace 101 for less than the ThreeQ too!
