Yesterday I had the incredible privilege of being the announcer for the 2009 Special Olympics Opening Ceremonies in Boise, Idaho. The show was broadcast worldwide. In all my years of doing VO I have never done a live show like this. What an experience. Rehearsals, script re-writes, pronunciation checks, more re-writes, guest celebrity changes, and then a few more script changes just before airtime. I had a show book with more than 200 pages. Exhausting....but what a gas! The production crew was amazing! They're the people who really make these shows happen. For those of you fortunate enough to have done these things ...you know what I'm talking about. But THIS old stove had never done ANYTHING like this before. Like Chuck Davis said, "This job just rocks sometimes." See? There IS hope for us geezers.

Bob, thank you. And, Mandy...just after announcing the Russian delegation...I heard a voice say, "Good job!" I looked up and one of the USA athletes was standing there looking at me. This young man with Down Syndrome was telling ME that I was doing a good job! This kid who had overcome SO much just to be in the games...told me I was doing a good job. A very humbling experience. One I probably needed.

Does put things in perspective, doesn't it!
How cool though!
And I'm sure you had fun announcing that Russian delegation! Wink

I had the pleasure of doing this gig when the Special Olympics opened at Parkhead Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1990. I'll never forget the gantry-shaking roar from the crowd as I announced the teams. Also stuck in the memory is the suspicious ankle-sniffing from the police explosives search dog who'd detected something very interesting about me. For all his explosives training, I suspect it was actually Parfum du Chat that was drawing him...

It wasn't the Russian delegation I had so many problems with...it was the Chinese and Korean ones. In fact, when I walked to my car after the show, I was afraid someone would be waiting to beat me up for slaughtering their names! And., Charles...the security was pretty tight here, too. They told me I wouldn't need a pass. "Just tell 'em who you are", they said. HUMPH! the cops had no CLUE who I was. And didn't care. Guess didn't fit the "bad guy profile, though. They finally let me in. Anyway, it was all great fun. Thanks, everyone, for letting me share.

Kinda interesting how things just land in your lap sometimes. I'm still amazed that I got through it all. What an experience!
