September,

I think Lee's counsel here is exactly what I would suggest; though if they are local, you'd also have the option (as Frank suggested) of visiting in person, bringing the letter with you when you do.

Oh, that's a tough one Ember. I'd liken it to when I left a company that I was with for 5 years to go to somewhere that would benefit me in the long run. It was hard to do, but in person or a phone call I think would be best, followed by a nice letter saying how you've enjoyed working with them. Good luck!

and you could mention that I'm available if agency A needs someone in your place! Inoccent j/k j/k!

I suspect this is less important than it appears. Unless you have a close, personal working relationship with Agent A an email saying "please delete me from your records" will suffice.

Vain Voice Overist "But will they think of me?"
Agent "October who?"

If I decided to leave Victoria (my agent in London) it would be handled very carefully as when we talk we spend 5 minutes on the phone talking business and 55 minutes talking, simply talking.

Hey again, you cute thang!!

I would absolutely do this over the phone rather than by email. You never know where agents end up. And if this agent happens to get a job at another agency you happen to be repped by, you want a good working relationship. Plus, it will take a few minutes out of your day. Sure it's a business relationship. But there's no reason to make it a cold, impersonal split.

I would say something along the lines of, "I feel at this point in my career making this change would be best. I want to thank you so much for everything. And if it doesn't work out, I'd love to keep the door open here."

Some actors feel more comfortable sending a letter. Most agents will drop a client with a letter. But why sink to that??

Break a uvula with the new rep!

You're not helping!!! I happen to know that in LA, Artistes stand outside the agent's office and throw stale pies at them ..... Don't you just love tradition.

i like the idea of the phone call - i think that's what i would prefer. maybe you could follow up with a letter offering some kind of multi-billion dollar bail out package???

I'm another vote for Lee's advice. I have an agreement with my agent that the contractual obligation can be severed by either party with 2 weeks notice in writing. I would give them a call or drop by and hand them my letter for the more personal touch. It all depends on your relationship with them. Professionalism and courtesy don't have to be mutually exclusive. Over thinking and stressing about your choice is also not necessary.
Good luck with the new agent.

Lee's advice is excellent. Good luck with that one. Never burn bridges. Always leave the door open in case there's a change.

Thanks so much for all the great advice guys. And you're right, if I'm not making money with them, they're not making money with me and probably won't even notice I'm gone. I think it's the Southern gal in me that never wants to be rude or hurt feelings Smile I'm going to call and send a letter...and possibly send a small tray of cookies to the agency, just to say thank you.

You may have heard/read me say it before, but I will say it again: "Be nice, and take out the trash"

Marketing is everything you do or don't do. It never hurts to be nice. because what you do now may/will affect your future.

Toodles

I am the kind of person who goes back to the old-school style when dealing with situations such as described. meaning: "Do it in person".

If you cannot do the "firing" in person due to location, as Agency A and B are in another state, city, country then a phone call is appropriate.

+1 in this regard. As Frank stated, your relationship with your agent is a business relationship, and go to the agency in person to discuss the situation and let them know that you think that it's time for you to go in another direction is best done face to face.

If that cannot be done due to location and distance, then schedule a teleconference to discuss the matter and let them know of your desire to change your representation.

How about telling them "I'm just not that into you!"

What?!
