|
|
I've got a phone message gig calling for "u" law, 8KHz, 8 bit, mono.
No problem. I'm recording on audacity and notice that my lowest bit option is 16 bit. Will that difference in bit rate mess up the client's ability to plug in the recordings on his end? Or should I convert before sending. (Yea, I"m like one of the apes on 2001...my technical prowess consists of hitting stuff till it does something, or breaks.)
I've had other phone messaging clients request this file format and I've had no problems...this is just the first time I've noticed that Audacity only goes to 16 bit _________________ Moe Egan

send it over and I'll format it for free if you need. 8 hz 8 bit does make a difference. |

Thanks Eddie...you're a gentleman and a scholar. My own personal VO guardian angle Ms Liz has already extended me that gracious offer too.
I love this place. _________________ Moe Egan

Just a quick note: When converting to (mu)/u-law the format ONLY records 8 bit. 8kHz. (Some product specific programs can record as 16 bit).
When converted back or to listen the file will/may be read as 16 bit.

You said it! And they sound like ca-ca to edit....a minor pet peeve of mine....always feel yucky sending stuff out 8/8/mu-law. Blech. _________________ Moe Egan

Always edit 44,100, 16 bt, 16 kHz, then convert. Or, take it down to 32 kHz which is TV audio quality.
Easier on the ears that way.

There is a way to avoid this sometimes depending on the phone system or pbx being used.
If the client has a system that can be uploaded remotely you can use phone patch and play the recording from your location in any file format that sounds good.
I did this on the last phone gig I got. The client gave me password and info to get to the right prompts for uploads.
And...you can charge extra for upload services |

I'm offended by the term "ca-ca".
Oh wait, wrong thread. _________________ http://www.musevoxvoiceovers.com

Dumb question: Why do phone equipment providers still use mu-law 8bit ca-ca? I'm sure it started that way because it takes a lot less memory storage at those low bit rates and memory used to be expensive, but now that you can store two Bob-Souer-read bibles in mp3 on a $5 chip the size of a dime, you think they'd make it easier on us folks.
