My favorite local engineer has checked out my set up and tweaked the symetrix for me, so I am sure that everything is set up properly. I'm waiting to get a response from my salesman at sweetwater to get more info about their return policy. Hopefully I'll solve the problem and post it here for future reference for others. In the meantime, I haven't actually ordered yet, so keep your ideas coming!
Thanks to all

Kathy:
I highly recommend you try another audio application like Audacity (since it is free) and see if the same problem occurs. Buying Pro Tools my fix one problem and create a WHOLE new one (or many).
Still convinced it is a gain structure problem or an issue with your EMU interface. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

"Still convinced it is a gain structure problem"
I agree. When I ran a DBX286A directly into my soundcard AA
brick walled at -6. When I ran the DBX into my mixer, then to the soundcard
it worked normal. _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

When I record in Audacity, it is limited to -6 dB also. So that makes me think it is not within Audition, but is somewhere else.
Brings me back to the preamp. Thanks for all the info and ideas. Any other recommendations? I appreciate all your help!

Actually it's a voltage problem. But the mixer idea is one of the great little buffers on the VO world. Good thinking Bill, that would make a big difference by adding a small mixer into the foray.

Kathy,
I have been very happy with Mackie mixers over the years. Good value for the money. _________________ Be well,

Hi Kathy,
A few years ago I had the same problem with the E-MU 1212M, that brick walled at -6 dB. You've probably loaded a session, containing -10 dBV instead of +4 dBu input/output levels. You can change them by clicking the 'session settings' button from the virtual E-MU mixer and selecting the I/O configuration.
Here you'll find the current input and output settings, including the configuration of the optical input and output (ADAT or S/PDIF). I changed the input reference level from -10 dBV to +4 dBu and the problem was solved. I hope this explanation will help.
Kind regards,
