I'm another one for the very light compression. I have a few custom profiles in AA labled "Light Compression", "Lighter Compression", "Even Lighter Compression".
They have evolved with experience. I've noticed as my experience increases, my need for compression decreases. _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

I'd suggest a noisegate or expander plug-in...

I mainly use compression to silence the background hiss that is there(between words)... sometimes after I amplify the volume. Usually I amplify the original by about 6db. But if I could clean that up without compressing, that might be better. |
By adding compression you RAISE the overall level of background hiss, because you decrease loud parts and increase the very soft ones, hence the background noise alas will be considerably more prominent... you might want to not go that route. |

One thought, you might consider Waves DeBreath http://www.waves.com/Content.aspx?id=258 ; this could reduce the breath sound and silence while leaving the body of the copy intact.
The caveats here: The Waves Vocal bundle is a bit pricey (although you may be able to buy the DeBreath plug-in separately), and the VST plug-in may not work with every audio editing program.
A simpler solution is to use a noise gate, then reduce the volume of each and every breath by -3db. You will need to listen to each breath as the noise gate might leave some parts of the sound intact, which behooves you to copy and save a few breath sounds to use later as replacements.
Do NOT compress the audio - period. Leave it pristine - then do your magic with DeBreath, Noise Gates, etc. IF you choose to compress - do this AFTER any of the other processing has been accomplished. Compression should be the LAST item in post.
