Moe's thread about the music teacher got me wondering how many of us have some form of music in our background. I'm a drummer. Snare and Bass in HS marching band. Some occasional (but ruff) trap kit work in garage bands.
Anyone else? |

I always wanted to learn to play the drums!! Way cool Tom. Rumor was the band teacher in middle school didn't like/allow female drummers, so I joined chorus.
Sang from 7th grade through college - in high school, was in the Show Choir, Girl's Choir, Concert Choir... good times. We performed at Disney/Epcot every year, and competed and did very well at State every year.
I LOVED singing. It was a great release for me during troubled times in high school. But I wasn't really good enough to make it a thang. Glad I get to use my voice in a different way now though! _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

I play classical guitar. Every day.
Not so much singing these days, but that was a big part of my life all through school and beyond (chorus, glee club, madrigal groups, choir).
Kids: one plays clarinet, upright bass and electric bass, the other plays tenor sax and drums. Both are in marching, concert and jazz bands. |

Piano first, drums now. I was a music major when I made my first attempt at college. With the theater I got to direct or perform in a ton of musicals.
I sing now whenever I can. _________________ DBCooperVO.com |

I played the flute in high school -- good but not great, so I dropped it -- and took voice lessons -- lots of opera. Even though I was a theater major, I did opera workshops with the music department in college, then after graduation, light opera in NYC, and spent two years doing Gilbert and Sullivan in repertory. It was hard work. The hoop skirts were fun, though. _________________ Diane

I can't carry a tune but I do love playing instruments. I'm not good at any, but I dabble. We have so many instruments in this house (several guitars, some that hang on the wall, an organ, keyboard, sax...), even the girls have a pink drum kit and there is always music around here. They won't go to bed without it! Nothing like a 2 year old waking at 1AM because she can't hear Etta James anymore and could I please restart the music.
Dan and I both ended up becoming audio engineers at Emerson College (you can gag now: we met in our first audio class) and would still love to have the big recording studio some day, in a barn in Maine. For now we're thrilled to just have the work we have and the little studio. But there are times I dream of recording bands again. _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Choir in grade, high school and college; voice lessons. Majored in music before switching to education for my first degree. Also took piano lessons. Played percussion in marching band in college. Also play recorder. Nowadays I mostly listen to music and occasionally sing in the car. Have a piano in my office that I play occasionally, and DH and I get the recorders out and play sometimes, too. I'm thinking of joining a local consort after the holidays.
In grad school when I was concentrating on astrophysics and such, there were two other grad students who played flute and recorder. In fact, our whole lab was stacked full of musicians and our holiday parties featured a bunch of folks jammin' on whatever they had -- one year we had two saxophones, a bunch of guitarists, drummers, a trumpet or two, etc.
DH plays in a brass quintet and one of the trumpet players is an astrophysicist at a nearby lab. It's interesting how many scientists also play or perform some sort of musical thang. _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

Kazoo here. I even have a professional brass kazoo, in a case.
I only play it on special occasions now, such as when someone comes unannounced to the door. I serenade them while they try to sell me something. I think they like it. They run down the street before I can even finish, rushing to tell others of my virtuosity. It warms my heart.

I have my degree in music - vocal performance. I also played the tuba many years ago and very badly, which is why I don't try to play it any more. But, I still have my mouthpiece! _________________ Be well,

Trumpet in high school marching band during football season, french horn during the concert season.
Countless numbers of church choirs.
Started playing upright bass in a folk trio in the 60's and then electric bass in jazz groups. Now my favorite. I play in a jazz trio that can expand up to a quintet, depending on what folks want to spend. We play mostly wedding receptions.
If you can stand it, here is one of the few times we recorded ourselves almost 20 years ago.
Press Play

Former Drummer here, played in several 70s high school garage bands (back then they were usually "basement" bands)
Also played violin and piano in grade school.
Have recently taken up the piano again. Mom was right. I am sorry I gave it up but at age 12 it wasn't a very "cool" instrument. |

I've been known to bang out a tune. Me, from 1990:

Once upon a time, I did too. I should really try and learn the entire piece sometime. _________________ Great Voice. Great Choice. For Voice Talking and stuff.

I sang in my college's traveling singing group for a couple years. I was in way over my head...almost everyone else in it were music majors of some kind. I could carry a tune, but not like those guys.
I think they just wanted me as the Eye Candy.
Yeah...that's it. _________________ We have nothing to fear but fear itself.
