I recently answered a post looking for voice actors and was asked if I was "represented by a talent agent."

I'm not agented. Would I be killing my chances if I responded "No"?

Could I answer something like "I'm in between agents" or "I currently shopping for representation"?

Just tell them no, you are not currently represented. The truth is [usually] the best answer - especially since you have no idea what answer they want.

Could be that they don't want an agent interfering and getting you the fee you deserve.

Thanks, Mary.

I went with the truth and told them I didn't have an agent.

We'll see what happens.

Hello Abner and welcome to the VO-BB (I'm a sucker for decorum)

I do not have an agent. Don't need one at the moment. I'm getting as much work on my own as folks who do have an agent. Besides, any agent would merely be involved in my VO career, whereas I am committed to my VO career. What's the difference? A Chicken is involved in the making of an egg salad sandwich, whereas she is committed to a chicken salad sandwich.

I think that's one of the funniest things I've heard all day, Moe.

So which came first? The Chicken salad sandwich or the egg salad sandwich?

Hi Moe. Thanks for the welcome. I just realized that, aside from a recent de-lurking, I haven't formally introduced myself to the board. How rude of me. Best fix that right now...

For the moment, I'm not too worried about having an agent. I'm kinda figuring that I need to "hustle" whether I have an agent or not. Figure I'd find work on my own and when it does come time to have an agent, showing them that I am able to book work may help some.

My original post was just trying to figure out what the best reply would be to the question "Are you represented?"

When the chicken stops layin' eggs, She winds up chicken salad. We all have our place in the grand scheme.

It's nice to have agents. I have a few, but if I sat back and waited on them...I'd have to buy a chicken farm.

Sometime, there's no need for formal introductions.

This just made me laff!

Moe,

I like this one. I've heard a slightly different version at times; when it comes to a breakfast of bacon and eggs.

The chicken is involved. The pig is committed.

I heard that about 18 years ago at a training seminar (when I was a corporate headhunter for a smidge). It's always stuck with me.

Hi,

My first though after reading this post was that maybe they'd PREFER non-repped talent - since then they may be able to negotiate a lower rate with a talent that is not well versed in rate negotiation.

Make sense?

You have a good point there Sarah....a lot of folks find fee negotiation a very difficult thing.
