Have we made any headway on that legislation to keep authors from reading their own books on tape?!? I need to know this. What petition do I freakin' sign.

The book I'm listening to now is very interesting, and the author is clearly an intelligent woman. In fact, she is so darn smart, she has so far invented 84 words, right there on the spot. Simply by doing certain suggested 'extercises' 'regurly,' I can 'quadripple' my 'comptency' in 'handing' 'sophistak-ed' interpersonal relationships.

I especially like being able to hear the pages turn in the background, and the shoddy editing (and contrary to personal opinion, it seems there is, in fact, editing) that creates sentences like, "Present in each situation is percep/ception, reception/and attention." (Levels indicated, of course, by font size, and audible breaks by '/' )

It's a work of art. Shocked

I think my head is bleeding. But maybe that's just because I'm beating my head on my desk. *sigh*

LOL, years ago I tried to listen to an audio book. I was so disgusted that I've never tried another and aside from doing some charitable reading, have stayed away. Something about the fluctuating levels and words like lybary just did me in.

I hope the head banging has left you a wonderful indent in which your coffee cup or mic stand fits to prefectiown.

If you want to hear an audiobook narrated by the author who knocks it out of the park, listen to The Memory of Running by Ron McLarty. Fan-freakin-tastic.

I want to sign, too. One of the Harlan Coben books (forget which one) is narrated by him. And he was horrible. Thankfully, he ponied up the cash and got Scott Brick for his latest.

Scott Brick Rocks.

In my never humble opinion, it is a rarity when a writer reading his own or directing his own work is any good.

Poets can be the worst!!

Playwrights are 2nd.

God 'elp us.

Hey, what are you all grumbling about? The writer/VO saved money by not hiring a professional, which translates into the choices made by the writer/VO, which further translates into the quality of the book.

You all know Hillary read her own audiobook... and just how good was that book?

Toodles

F2

This post will probably be censored, but she was/is atrocious as a VO.

I can understand why publishers of marginal books don't want to hire pros to do their audio versions... it's quite an expense to hire a Hollywood type or one of us.
For best sellers, the expense is worth it.
I guess people who listen in the car, won't be as bothered by the background noises -- but they sure will be bothered by the level changes.

John Nance is another one who shouldn't read his own books, but apparently he's read almost every single one of them. And he has a pronounced lisp, no less.

"SkyHook. By John J. Nanth".

Bless his heart.

Bill Bryson is the only person that should read his own books. He's perfect, especially as a sleepy-time companion. I got the un-abridged version of his A Short History of Everything after enjoying Bryson's read of the shorter version, but there was a Brit who read it instead, and he was professional and all, but just didn't have the right style at all. A big disappointment.

But yes, some authors should stick to the pen and avoid microphones at all cost.

Bill Bryson is also in the "he rocks" category.
