So I did this movie trailer for my wife and her friends who are off on their semi-annual girls weekend. I normally produce a CD for them with music and bits, and as this was the 40th birthday for two of them, I decided to do something special. But I'm having trouble with how I process my voice. It comes off as too hot or loud or something. Any suggestions would be great. I'm using Adobe Audition 1.5. Here's the trailer:

Thanks

Sounds fine to me. Pretty clever stuff, too, I might add.
My wife would kill me if I ever did anything like that. _________________ Jeff

Very creative. See what you've started!
Are you multi-tracking? If you are, pull the level down on the music tracks.
Really, you don't need to let levels go above -6 to -3 in your final mix. If you "normalize" tracks, don't go above 95 to 98%.
You may consider hard limiting the final mix which should brilng your music levels consistant with the rest of the tracks.
Just thoughts.

Just as an FYI for general info this is where a multiband compressor really shines. Use it after you mix down as opposed to a hard limit (which works too).
Unfortunately Audition 1.5 doesn't have one. The Waves c4 is pretty good, Izotope's Ozone is good, and Audition 2.0 has one built in. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

Matt,
To me it sounded like your voice was over compressed a little and thin on the EQ...and your music was a little too loud as you said. I would keyframe the music levels to act as a ducking tool (so the music drops some when you speak and go back to full volume when you are not...but not too much). Also, some theatric slams, whooshes etc would help give it more punch IMHO.
Hard limit with a good limiter and/or multiband would be good too.
Sounds great otherwise. Great idea for a surprise. Have fun! _________________ Ben

FYI - Hard Limiting IS available on AA 1.5. Find it under Effects>Amplitude.

Hang on, you wouldn't want to compress after the final mix. That will make your music go up and down in volume. Or am I missing something? _________________ Jeff

Multiband Compression is often used in the mastering process. It compresses certain frequency ranges and can be/is often used after final mix down if done sparingly. It can be used to further shape the sound of the project, so to speak, after the final mix is done.
Often someone will slap a multiband compressor on a final mix which is a little to loose in the bass spectrum and tighten it up and add a phat punch, thus cleaning it up and giving a tighter sound. It can be used in a variety of ways. If you hear your final mix pumping and breathing, you are using too much compression. Thus, sparingly is the key word.
As a side note, I am not Kevin Genus (The Gearu) I just try to play him on the VO-BB from time to time. :bitchin: _________________ Ben

Ben,
Wow you're smart.
Doc, I was referring to the multiband.. not hard limiting. Guess I should have written more clearly. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

well that's interesting. I've always come from the "fix tracks seperately" school, and if the mix doesn't sound right, then tweak the individual parts until it does. But hey, whatever works. _________________ Jeff

Brian,
No worries! Just wanted to point out that AA 1.5 DOES have a Hard Limiter.

I've gotta say, gang, that I am awed by the people on this board! Not only did a lot of you post some great suggestions, but a couple guys contacted me at my email and provided additional suggestions and even some assistance! Absolutely fantastic! And why I lurked for so long without being a member escapes me now.
So, all that to say, "Thanks!" I look forward to a long and enjoyable stay.

Remember... it always pays to join... and even more when you post. Last Christmas, every member with 100 or more posts, received a new microphone. We each get to keep it for one week... and then mail it to the next member on the list.
