I know there has been some talk about WOVOCON and Voiceover Conferences in general on the board - that's wonderful.

I know SOME people Wink poo-poo voiceover conferences (depending on the conference, I might agree) but even that's OK.

But for the moment, I just wanted to share why I will be going to WOVOCON in October. And as I begin to write this....I have no earthly understanding to whom I am writing this...I just want to say this outloud to SOMEbody and if you're reading this....tag you're it!

I was going to go to WOVOCON last year (reservations and everything) but a family issue came up and that was that.

The reason for me wanting to attend now, as then, is that I need to be around my people...my voiceover people. I felt (sometimes still feel) creatively a bit empty, uninspired...all of it - and while phone calls and zooms are nice, they are not in person.

Of course, I could be around "voiceover people" (and many nice, talent friends of mine) at the super Wal-Mart sized ala carte, buy-what-I'm-selling, pay extra for everything and be surrounded by many many hundreds of people (all of whom are fine folks) voiceover conventions.

I've done many of those shows and it's a no from me.

Any explanation I would offer as to "why" would sound bitter and bitchy, even though that's not my intent. So let me just say no. Not for me.

And while we are all pining for Faffcon X...that is not happening.

Faffcon will also not be happening at the WOVOCON Voiceover Unconference.

It cannot because WOVOCON's unconference will be its own unique dynamic. That's as it should be. I'm excited to be a part of that birth.

I also thought last year and this year would be a good investment of my time and money because our friend George Washington is overseeing the event. And this year, he took the initiative to get Amy's approval to use the Unconference format.

So when George and Dan asked me to help out this year, I said yes.

It will not be Faffcon. It will be the WOVOCON Unconference. I have a sense of what it will be and I have no idea what it will be.

If you miss your people, like I have, this may be your opportunity too.

Our industry is changing unlike anything I have seen in 40+ years. I have no idea what the future holds. Neither do you (nor do all the voiceover oracles - yes that was bitchy and bitter but also a clean, accurate shot --- boo-yah!)

But I know I'll be in Chicago Oct 18-20. And I'm pretty sure I'll be happy.

Comfort & joy. That's my hope.

Thanks for reading.

I did go to WoVoCon last year for precisely the reason you stated. I even joined WoVo so I could go. Come to find out, you don't have to be a member to attend this year's event. So even UNmembers are welcome at the UNconference.

Hi Lee,

Yup, the board has done that. Of course the non
Members will be vetted first and pay a higher fee (which can be put towards the membership fee if they choose to join).

So glad you will be there!
