Clarify 'lifts' for me please.
I'm of the understanding that lifts are parts of the VO that they can 'lift' out and place in future spots/projects.
Do I have that correct? _________________ www.moosevoice.com |

Correct. And each lift corresponds with the contract or platform it is being lifted for. For instance, I have done commercials where the buyer wants to lift a line from one spot and put it in another. They have to pay me the lift fee, which reflects another scale session payment (often we can negotiate over scale), and applicable residuals. I've had television cartoons that have been lifted for usage in a film (kids watching cartoons) where I am paid a day rate as if I worked on the film, plus applicable residuals. |

Thanks Bob. Are the 'lifts' spelled out in the SAG-AGTRA rates then? _________________ www.moosevoice.com |

Couldn't tell ya. You can look at all the rate sheets, but they are pretty vast:

I've never relied on the rate sheet for lift info. I leave all of this up to my agent. And it has always been paid out as I described above. |

These are the advantages of being in the Union I'd wager... in Non-Union land, the verbiage usually goes something like this:
Global Buyout, Includes: Streaming Radio, Internet, Social/Digital/New Media and Industrial (including all edits, lifts, cutdowns, versions and any recorded tags).
-or-
All recordings, to be used in all digital media, industrial and in-store (including, but not limited to Client owned and operated properties, i.e., website, social, etc.) including all lifts, variations, cut downs & foreign language adaptations.
As non-union talent, I've never once been paid for a lift on the back-end like Bob; it's always been front-loaded/worked into the one and only rate I'll ever receive for that recording session, unless the client re-ups for another year. _________________ Mike Paul

I hear ya. I absolutely could not make a living on session fees. It's all about residuals, reuse, lifts, etc. One of the reasons we are so adamant about tackling AI at the union is AI is the next generation of lifts and residuals. If our past work is used for new content, we get paid. The buyer will profit from new/additional revenue, we want profit sharing. Often a lift on, say....a commercial also comes with a new conflict. That conflict comes with residuals as that conflict prevents us from working for a competing company. A lift in a feature film can mean tens of thousands in residuals. Lifts are used all the time, for toys, theme parks, albums, I could go on and on. For the union actor, being paid on new and (or) additional versions of the original session is a huge aspect of how we make our living. |

I did a non-union medical ISI (Important Safety Information) that was fairly lengthy. Even for a medical language expert, it was an incredibly difficult script.
A year later, I was contacted and asked if I would agree for that ISI to be lifted to a union internet commercial - buyout for 1 year.
This year was the second renewal. Because the spot was union, I was paid as union. Every year the buyout has been a bit more than the year previous. |
