What's your studio fee?
And do you charge it for every single gig? _________________ www.moosevoice.com |

I don't have a studio fee per se. I set a rate based on many different variables, from what I believe my time to be worth to purchase & depreciation of gear ... along with lots of other stuff. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Zero! Having a studio is a necessity today in vo. It wasn't until Covid. It is now.
If a buyer has a choice between an actor with a home studio and an actor without one, the one with the home studio is a selling point.
When Covid hit many a union actor asked me to go to the powers that be at SAG-AFTRA and request home studio reimbursements. I said, "Funny, no one asked to be reimbursed for demos, headshots, a monthly pager fee." These, as well as a home studio are the costs of doing business. The time I save not having to drive to auditions or sessions, not to mention savings on gas, this all adds up to value. I do not need to charge for the use of my home studio. |

The closest thing to this I ever see is a session fee. And that's pretty much only for commercials that might not actually air so you get paid something for your time. For promo, trailer, narration, it's expected that you can provide the services (recording, voicing, minor editing) for the set fee. And if you are scratching for a trailer, you are doing that for free unless the spot finishes. This is somewhat analogous to a tradesman rolling out to a location, writing up an estimate, and then maybe getting the job. Or not. Production houses are often working on some pretty thin margins and have hundreds of people who would be thrilled to scratch for the chance at finishing.
As Bob says, I am more than happy not to spend hours a day driving around LA to auditions and sessions. Although I would do it in a heartbeat if I could be a part of the OG VOs who would meet in an office to trade stories and tips while waiting for their turn on the mic... _________________ Jack Daniel

No fee. There are some jobs where I charge for editing on top of voicing, but those are unique. I have one client that pays a session fee but it is multilingual and I'm the voice wrangler so it evens out. _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.
