I get it. I was talking once to a gentleman who was standing on a tarmac in Hawaii on December 7, 1941. He was telling lots of interesting stories. When he got to the part about a strafing of Schofield Barracks, he just stopped and went somewhere else for a few minutes. Emma’s step father was in North Africa during the first losing battles against Rommel, and was offered the chance to change military careers. He chose flying and captained more than 25 missions over Europe in a B-24 bomber. That’s all he ever told the women of the family. He filled in more of the stories with me alone one day and I learned why he and so many veterans usually go silent and stare blankly when the chance to speak arises.
