I got my Mac G4 tower and PowerBook from Mac Edge, the local computer guys.
Beats a catalog, hands down.
Best.
Purchase.

Bought a Rode NTK and a Digi 002, two separate pruchases, from www.digitalplayroom.com They through in FOR FREE two 20' mic cables, boom stand, pair of headphones , a Samson C01 condensor mic, an NTK shockmount and a pop filter. They were great to deal with, too. |

In the northeast/New England area, there is a great chain called Daddy's Junky Music (www.daddys.com) who carry an outstanding selection of used gear. Unfortunately, they don't offer mail order, so you have to be near a store. However, if you keep your eyes on the website, every once in a while a few gems manage to pop up for sale. The salespeople are very knowledgeable, friendly, and willing to take another 10% off of any price (15-20% sometimes if you're a regular customer).

In Northern California, I use GELB Music. David's a great keyboard player who runs the recording side of the biz and he turned me on to Pro Tools MBox when I first looked for an analog mixer in their part of the store where recording gear is sold.
Got RODE NT-1000, NTK, T-Racks sofware and other audio equipment there, too. They've always good for discounts that resulting in a price that does not exceed anything I've found on the Internet or Ebay.
My Medion Wintel platform used for DAW was a "free" replacement under an extended warranty plan from Best Buys.

Mercenary Audio in MA and Atlas Pro Audio in FL. I'll stop by GC, Ebay and used gear from other studios.
I've got a great Millennia STT-I up for sale now!

Bought three AKG 414's for $250 - seller had bundled them with an old ENG videocassette machine. I kept one and sold the others for $500 each. Sweeeeet! |

Guitar Center is cool if you like to haggle and are good at it... I go there to touch the equipment.
Full Compass used to be my exclusive outlet but has been replaced by Sweetwater.
zZounds has great prices, and have always been good to me... but...
I always end up back at Sweetwater. My sales rep Brandon is awesome. These guys have competitive prices. They are not afraid to steer you to something better suited to the project. They are honest, and I know that they are much more familiar with the equipment than I am. Most of these guys have studios, play in bands, engineer for the big boys when not working. |

Hey, Justin,
Do the Sweetwater Guys let you try stuff out?
I want to get my hands on a different mic, but I want to try it out in my room. _________________ DBCooperVO.com |

Hi DB, I really don't know. Normally I try stuff out at Guitar Center, or Full Compass. What I can tell you is they are the most helpful people I've ever talked to. If you don't have a rep, call and ask. They don't try to sell you something you don't want. Mine answers my e-mails within the day and offers suggestions based on his experience.
As far as testing Mics, GC won't do it for health reasons. I don't know if that is an IL/IN (on the border, I visit both) issue or not. Others let you do that. Best bet would be to call them.
According to their web-site they do have demo gear, just not sure about mics... http://www.sweetwater.com/help/product-information.php#2
The customer service has always been top notch. |

Guitar Center will not accept mic returns, as far as I know, but it is interesting that Musician's Friend will... I think they are the same company now. I was going to return the Behringer B1 that I got and they had no problem with it after I had it for a month but I decided to keep it anyway.
Check it out though, their policy could change. |

My wife, Anne's Subaru Legacy Estate - Y'all call it a station wagon, came from Best Buys under their "use a Portgordon voice over" plan. Ironically, the refurbishments to her office were funded by Subaru under a similar scheme.

All my gear, mail order. If you see where I live, you'll understand why. |

I have worked with Sweetwater in the past. My rep will let you try mics, but you have to clearly explain what you're doing up front in advance and you have to pay for the mic before they send it.
