VO-BB - 19 YEARS OLD!

i am 100% dumping adobe - which means i'm leaving audition.

i love audition & hate everything else about adobe. it's like a divorce ... and audition is the kids.

what should i use? price isn't the issue (i've been paying $600/year for the adobe suite)

i'm basic, basic ... MAYBE a few tracks in multitrack every now and again.

i really feel like protools is overkill for me --- but, i'm open to experimentation.

Maybe find an older (V3.0) of adobe audition?... A standalone program with no monthly subscription fees.

I have no idea how it works with a mac, but it plays well with Win 10, 64 bit and is seemingly break proof.

I've had a love/hate relationship with the Adobe corporation.

Around 2020 I bought a boxed copy of Audition 3.0 as a backup, installed it, went to validate the license...only to find that Adobe shut down the server for it and no longer supported it. This was after buying Audition CS6 from what I thought was a reputable reseller. Adobe said the CS6 license was phony.

I haggled with Adobe back and forth and told them I need a license for Adobe CS6 and would pay for it instead of going with Creative Cloud. After a week or so, they actually gave me a CS6 serial number. They knew I used adobe CC for almost a year in 2019 and verified my AA3 serial number as valid.

I offer this up as a possible solution but YMMV with this.

Magix Soundforge Pro is good and comes bundled with Spectralayers Pro, which has an almost similar erasing tool that Audition has. Soundforge is a different animal altogether, which means learning a new system. And it doesn't have multi-track capability, like it's older cousin Samplitude.

i downloaded the trial version of Reaper and, on a first look, i like it enough to give it a try for a while and see what happens.

fyi - i jumped to DaVinci Resolve over a year ago to dump Premiere Pro, i'm going with "Affinity" to replace photoshop & i have forced myself to learn "Fusion" to replace After Effects. i use InDesign & Illustrator 3 or 4 times a year, and i think Affinity will cover those needs as well.

next ... de-google. that will be harder.

Todd, I dumped Audition almost five years ago for REAPER and I love it. Great for working with video. Your audio edits will edit the video! The custom skins are a lot of fun too.

Here's how to tweak REAPER so you can make cuts like in the Edit mode of Audition for selecting areas then deleting. But it's still non-destructive, unlike in Audition.

Just a thought. I had something similar about 9 years ago.

On the advice of one the VO-BB members , I purchased a copy of Audition 1.5 from somewhere like Amazon/Craig's List , I forgot exactly where.

But, even though it is pretty basic and a Dinosaur, it has worked great for me for years( I Too am a Simple Old Dinosaur LOL ). I only paid once for the Install Disc, No Subscription Fee, and have used it on more than one computer after they died.

Just my two cents.

I'm adding on the answer to the question "How do you save a highlighted section in REAPER like one does in Audition:

Highlight the selection.
Then I "Render" the file by clicking shift+command+R
then the Render to File box opens. In the top right there is a dropdown menu for "Bounds".
Select "Time Selection"
Then it will "Render" the highlighted selection, in other words it saves that selection in what ever format you select to whatever directory you select.

Three other reaper features you might (or might not) care about:

1. HTTP remote control api
2. Ridiculous extent of scriptability
3. Extensible to do both mundane and really weird stuff via dynamic libraries (but you should only try if you have a beard and wear suspenders)

You can pretty much treat reaper as an operating system unto itself, control it from any device with a browser (or any device that you can convince to make http requests, even without a browser), and automate damned near anything in your house from it.

It's fun to just use reaper even when you don't actually have any work to do. I switched to it many moons ago (maybe 2010 or 2011) from Vegas and SF when reworking an old DSE7000 control surface to be a midi controller / mixer, and found that developing extensions for Vegas was... well, that way lay madness, at least at the time. So I got used to reaper, and then I began to love reaper.

As BOC tells us, we should not fear the reaper.

P.S.: install the Standing Water Studios extension - it will improve your life.

Another spectral editing option is Steinberg's Spectralayers Pro. I have Pro 6 as it came bundled with Magix Soundforge Pro Suite 13 years ago. The latest iteration is Pro 8.

It has a similar function to Audition's healing tool, called Eraser. It's pretty much the same thing, without all the hassle of dealing with Adobe!
