I know.... I know...
Why even bother trying, but I just truly can NOT understand the deliberate destruction of a website.

A website I manage for a group I belong to got hacked this week.
(CineTechMediaPros.org)

I sort of get the ones who ask for money.
That's all about...the money...it's mercenary, but OK, that's theft, and can "understand" that. Lips Are Sealed

But I don't get what satisfaction people get from going into a small trade association website that really doesn't get the traffic that anyone would really be impressed with your "work" and just mess with it.
Meh

Hey, a future cyber terrorist has to start somewhere. Practice practice practice. Sad.

Like a home burglary it can feel like a personal assault. I’m sorry for the trouble and worry you may be going through.

Luckily our awesome host, Brad Newman, handled it, but it took HIM a few days because there was apparently A LOT of crap in there!

I just don't understand the mentality of the person at that keyboard doing this destruction.

Does. Not. Compute. Sick

Not making excuses for them, but maybe the hackers thought (incorrectly) that there was $$ to be found- "It's cinema, tech, and media related- they've got big bucks to dig for!" Money Mouth Money Mouth

Gah. This is why I hate most people. Dammit

One guess is based on something we see a lot of: some people doing things simply because they are able to; not because there's necessarily a worthy reason. Boredom isn't a worthy reason. "Idle hands are the devil's workshop (tools or playground)."

Arrogant degenerates always mess things up for everyone else. I've experienced a lot of that in my life.

Not long ago my inbox started getting flooded with thousands of "failed login" attempts for a website that I oversee. The brute force tactics were impressive and relentless and it went on for almost two hours straight. Probably the only thing that saved my bacon was that logins for specific administrator accounts lock out after 3 failed attempts AND the admin login wasn't "admin". Eventually we activated 2FA for all administrative logins and forced immediate lockout of an IP attempting to log in using anything that wasn't an official admin username.

It was a really tense couple hours though. They could be doing it for the money or the "lulz" but the guy on the receiving end sweats bullets the entire time.

I'm sorry that site got hacked, Lizden. ): Brad is good people and the right guy to have on your team for clean-up.

They can't do this if they never leave the basement, so they channel their impulses elsewhere. Besides, have you seen the cost of spray paint lately?

I forgot to mention, besides my site having been hacked once several years ago (but I noticed it early and was able to fairly easily restore and secure it, thanks to a great plugin), the arrogant degenerates also have a way to foul up SEO statistics by causing fake referrals using a means I don't yet understand. However, while stats will show a site getting much referral traffic, the site itself is not compromised.

#ReferralSpam or #ReferrerSpam

THIS.

I have been an administrator on a few high-traffic automobile boards, and you'd be amazed at the number of attacks that come in per day. The sad fact is that there are a lot of mental and social misfits out there that get their thrills by simply "gaming the system." They also get a kick out of seeing others have to scramble to undo their mischief. There are those who are looking for financial gain, but generally speaking they are going to look at bigger targets.

This is the generation we now have to deal with. People who think that hoodies are a fashion statement and start every sentence with "Ummmmm...." Rolls Eyes
