So I'm fairly new to audiobooks and this is my second one with the same author, a murder mystery. With this book instead of it reading "chapter #" it just has the number by itself. He offered that I could read it either way. I'm leaning toward saying "chapter #." What's your preference? (Poll above!)

Thank you!

If you make it clear that it's a chapter identifier in how your read it, that should be understandable to the listener. And if the author wants it, well, it's their book.

What did you say in the first book? My thought is to be consistant with that.

Thanks Bruce. Yeah, he seems fine with either way and hasn't let me know his preference, hence the quandary. I guess it's not that big of a deal, just thought I'd ask some more seasoned pros what they would do if given the choice in this particular situation. Just saying the number does have a certain ominous quality to it. Hmmmm

Thanks Moe- The first book was "Chapter #" (it was written that way.)

Thanks again to you all!

Was recently listening to a great audiobook, “The horse and his boy”, performed by Alex Jennings.

He reads the chapter number and title. It is helpful to help find your place if you take a break and you leave that place in your device.

It's not disturbing to hear the chapter number read.

Why not just do it and let the producer decide ?

If the author had not given the OK, I would say to read it exactly as written. But since the author has given you discretion, I think you should go with your instinct and do "Chapter 1," "Chapter 2," etc.

When I do proofing work, I expect to hear it exactly as written on the page. If the author wrote "Chapter 15" I should get that, otherwise, just "15". Anything else I flag. So, generally speaking, I agree with Lee to do exactly what's written. If you do otherwise, you may get it returned to you as a pickup.

I don't think it's difficult for the average listener to follow if you read the number solely, provided the pacing of the recording is handled correctly. It certainly isn't for me.

Agreed. The pronunciation of "Chapter..." is, however, a formal flourish that catches the listeners' ear and 'allows' for that pause button.
