How do you bill voice mail/IVR applications? Per hour, per message, per page? I want to riase the rate for one of my long-time clients for whom I've been doing voice mail announcements for years. When we first agreed on a rate years ago, I had never done that kind of work and might have low-balled them. I know that quoting actual rates is kind of taboo in this business, but if anyone wants to e-mail me off list with a ballpark rate, I'd appreciate it.

This is not directly related to your question, but indicative of the weirdness of rate structures. I received an interesting email today. I won't bore you with the entire thing, but will share "Requirement #1" to be considered for future work.

Requirements:

#1 Accept $15 to read, edit and deliver a 3-4 minute script. If you're familiar with Message On Hold production, you know this is easy money.

I think I read further, but I'm not sure why. It didn't get any more promising. There was talk of guaranteeing your work, 2-3 day turnaround, etc., but I was so shocked at #1, it's all a blur. Yes, I've prostituted myself on occasion for less than my regular rate for a regular client, but unless that's a typo and there's a zero missing, what could they be thinking? (rhetorical question)

If you think that's bad, take a look at this one - they even used the word ethic!! As James Earl Jones said, never turn down a job.... yeah right!

I saw that one on All-Access too. I think the good news on an offer like that is that the companys won't be around for long. They're pretty much all fly-by-nighters. No pile of dung can attract flies forever.

In response to Dnn G. I saw that notice too and sent them a note back with the few words.."you gotta be kidding." Of course there not. Pity.

DB,

I too say that info from Interactive Voices. I have thoughts about them having spoken with them awhile back..but i do think the info both in that ad and in her on line book can be helpful to a lot. Just take from it what you need or want and it's not bad.

It ain't no Harlan Hogan book but than..there's only one Harlan Hogan.
