ok - here's the deal - shooting video of a doc in a surgery unit - lots of room noise so i applied the NR filter in AA 5.5.

in the before sample witness the room noise - in the after - notice the reverb/echo - is the echo there ANYWAY - and i just can't hear it over the room noise? or did the echo occur in the processing? i THINK i prefer the reverb over the room noise either way, and i know removing reverb is like un-baking a cake. just looking for some insight/opinions. pay no attention to the female voice - she will not be heard.

before

after

I have a pretty good ear and I hear the room reverb in both the before and after...the noise reduction removed the back ground noise and made the room reverb much more noticeable along with some NR artifacts that are not too bad..,and I have never been able to find a way to acceptably remove room reverb in post either. Perhaps you can cover it up with some B-Roll sound from the nurses station.

After is much better. Most live TV sound is just like that, kinda room boomy. You'll notice it less on a small speaker in a TV or computer, especially since most people listen in a non-acoustically treated space anyway.

oh, yes. definitely "b" - i was wondering - as tony pointed out - was the reverb there before i applied the filter - or did the filter "create" the reverb. i kinda felt like it was the former - but didn't want to trust my ears since i'd been working on audio-syncing this beeyotch of a video all morning and had nearly lost all patience with it.

What's left to be said - pretty good work on the noise reduction!

So I downloaded your A file and applied Sony NR to it, got the same reverb. Listened closely to A alone and heard the echo also, Listened to version B and found a little less noise and room boom in the Sony NR version, but not enough to make a real difference.

Nice job!

Like everyone else, I much prefer "B". I also have to use a little NR in AA5.5 due to a less-than-desirable noisefloor at my new place (will be moving the studio to the basement in coming months). I don't think the NR feature would add the reverb, although if you overdo it, it CAN add a flange-like sound to the audio.

Yeah, the hum was masking the reverb (and so much more!).

My processing in AA3:
Edit Mode > Effects > Restoration > Adaptive Noise Reduction > Light Noise Reduction Preset (High Quality).

Then, in Edit mode, use the compander in Dynamic Processing (2:1 below -50dbFS, leave everything else flat).

Presto! Instant -76dbFS noise floor, with full -3dbFS peaks, even when the live noise floor is UGLY.

Love it!
