Then:
I had just gotten divorced. Had a real job with health benefits at a major Boston hospital. I was performing in Murder Mystery shows to make some money. Was asked to join a small theater company of women actresses and writers. My daughter had recently ended her engagement and moved back into my apartment. I figured this was potentially going to provide either sitcom material or Greek Tragedy.

In 2000:
March. I got laid off from the hospital job. August, my landord of 20 yrs. gave us a three month notice to move so he could give the apartment to his nephew and niece. November, I got hit by a car and had three surgeries on my back, one on my neck and five months in rehab.

Now:
I set up my small home studio. Deebs has finished my web site. I updated my demos. I've gotten a couple of gigs doing children's web sites, one of which is ongoing. I'm now going to have CD's made up, business cards etc and do some major marketing. I also took Bob Bergen's workshop in the spring and got to meet Greg, Moe and CC!!!

I'm still working with the same theater company. We are publishing a book in late summer of poetry and short prose. I'll actually be a published author which is interesting since I never had a desire to write before joining this theater company.

Great stories all Smile Great reading!

Here's my short story.

Then: 31 yrs old, married for two years to Wife 2.0 (best upgrade ever), inherited 12 yr old step-daughter, working middays on the air (4th station since 1985) and running a successful graphics imprinting business out of our home. Had been wanting to do VO for some time.

Now: 41 years old, married for 12 years (same woman), still have step-daughter living with us, no kids of my own, still at same radio station but now the Hobo Laughing and I have a home studio. All quiet on the VO front as I've had no recent gigs.

Geez - 10 years ago wasn't so very long ago...it was only 1998 f'gudness sake.

Hmmm - my time as a TV director, then TV staff announcer is long past, my time free lancing as a producer/writer/talent is long past, my full time position with the military industrial complex (wearing those same hats) is long past, my part-time weekend radio gigs are long past.

I guess in 1998 I was just moving away from wearing all those hats to full-time VO. I picked up my once per semester introduction to Voice Acting Class at City College in 1999 and have been doing that ever since (wondering the past year or so if I'll be able to carve out the 5 or so hours a week it takes to get down to school and teach the class.)

Then one spring I called my regular (and by then, my only producing client) to tell them that I might not be able to work the annual project due to my increasing need to be near my studio. Ironically they were just getting ready to call me to say that the budget had been cut that year. Serendipity.

Other highlights - new deck, new jacuzzi (now needs new cover), new (now getting old) car, new kitchen, new beau, lost a parent and several wonderful pets, gained a couple wonderful new ones (pets, not parents). Learned to two-step, line dance and tap! So the past 10 years have been good!
