Deidre, just went searching for the C1, and I think I'll have to give it a try. Maybe I'll sell the Soundelux
On another topic, does anyone know what mic Harlan was using in his portable sound booth? _________________ Enjoy life, this is not a rehearsal.

Let us know more when you decide to sell the Soundelux..
Didn't someone say Harlan Hogan's example mic was a Sennheiser 416, which is very directional and very effective for "low amibient noise" use anyway? _________________ Wild Willie Edwards

Thanks everyone who posted about Harlan's mic. I thought it looked like a Sennheiser, but I didn't know which one.
I just ordered the C1 mic and also this: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/LinkUSB/
It was between the TAPCO link and the M-Audio Mobile Pre: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MobilePre/
I had several conversations with the guys at Sweetwater, and they confirmed my thought that the preamps will be better on the Mackie, although I have the M-Audio Firewire 410 and I love it. However, I use it with an Earthworks preamp, which takes care of the M-Audio preamp quality issue with my main rig.
Sweetwater also said the C1 mic was very "bright" (and Deirdre you were right.....it was a guy who said that). But the Soundelux is also bright, and I like the sound so we'll see. I'll let you know when they get here and I can play!
I think I'll hang on to the Soundelux for now, and use the C1 setup for travel and as a backup. _________________ Enjoy life, this is not a rehearsal.

I know I'm new on this board, but I'll also weigh in with the Mackie preamps. Particularly the ONYX series are rather good, and clean, but almost to the point of sterility.
Using it with an RE-20 or NT-1A is no problema, but with many mics, I find myself choosing a more "colored" pre (X73i or PEQ1-R, for some an old 610 works like magic), to give it some character.
As always though, it's the talent in front of the onion that makes or breaks a recording chain _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

I don't know the Sweetwater guys all that well, but I can't imagine a lot of them are Voice Talkers.
Anyone know?
I just wonder where they come from with their "recommendations". _________________ DBCooperVO.com |

I use the C1 and I would say it has a nice amount of brightness to it, but I wouldn't say it was overly bright. If you close mic or play with lessening the mic distance you can lessen the brightness if you think it's too bright at your normal mic distance. It really gets much more bassy and less bright the closer you get. _________________ TG2

None of the ones I've chatted with have been into VO.
Take what you will out of that.
As where they get their recommendations, I'd say that a bit of it is corporate (as is any major retailer... it can't be helped), and from their own personal experience in whatever genre of recording/music they're from.
This is why we have sites like this, and gearslutz, homerecording.org, etc. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

I've been dealing with Sweetwater for nearly 6 years and I've yet to talk to anyone there who is a Voice Talker...and FWIW I'm not overly impressed with their recommendations either. But that's not a slam...I like Sweetwater and their folks...just not their taste in equipment. _________________ . If at first you don't succeed, then bomb disposal probably isn't for you. |

I, too, tried the Neumann. Just couldn't get a decent sound out of it. Went back to my trusty RE-20. Finally sold the Neumann to a composer friend. He LOVES it. Microphones are kinda like Spandex: there's no accounting for taste. |

One man's gold and all that...
I've also spent some time in front of the TLM103. I found it to be a tad more brittle than I would have preferred on my voice, but it definitely works for others.
I'll stick with the U87, than you very much.
That said, I found a good alternative to the 103 in the Gefell UM930. I don't know what their latest price increase has pushed the market cost to (they're getting like Neumann in that regard), but it was very competitive in price and more so in performance to the TLM103 IMO. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

Deirdre,
All of the Sweetwater guys with whom I've spoken (maybe half a dozen or so in the last 5 years) all come from a musician background, either bands (rock or pop) or jazz.
If someone is looking to set up a music workstation for composition or home music recording, they are well equiped to offer recommendations, but don't seem to know much that relates directly to the voiceover world.
My $0.02, anyway. _________________ Be well,

so...
does anyone know of a place that does somewhat have good taste for a VO gear?
For me, I usually call places like Atlas and Mercenary. And while I get great reviews on gear (thus far they've been 100% for my needs... after I researched and tested a bit), they're operating on other people's opinions regarding VO.
This has worked for me, but you know what they say about opinions and experience.
Thankfully, I can call larger VO/ADR studios and find out what they're using and compare the gear, and experience of their engineers to my own needs. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser
