You need outboard power to run the Focusrite interface with an iPad |

If, like most of us, you use a condenser mic......
Spend a little more, and go for the 18is, which is not bus-powered, but has an AC power supply.
Using bus-power to support phantom powered mics usually results in an underpowered mic.
Same pre's, but more likely to provide true 48v power to your condenser. _________________ Don Brookshire

Thanks Ben but I don't need any inputs, was just looking for an ipad AD converter with a digital out. It's not for the business, just for listening to music on Spotify. For that, the Pure looks just the ticket and much cheaper than the Arcam, so I ordered one (thanks George!)
As an aside, I admit I once took a mobile rig on holiday. Even invested in a rather laughable porta-booth. I don't think it's something I would want to do again.
For a start, the technical quality of what we sent out was so far behind our usual standard that I'm still cringing. And second, what's the point of this business if you can't take a PROPER holiday now and then? I'd go so far as to say that, for me, a complete break from the business is essential to not just unwind but also get perspective. Ironically, I usually come back bursting with mojo and fresh ideas to take things forward.
Anyway, back to the thread! And, however you choose to use it, the i-pad is a very cool toy for what we do! _________________ Colin Day - UK Voiceover

Well said. What is the point of a vacation if you can't be on vacation. Last time I travelled for pleasure, I brought a setup, but wasn't doing anything SO important it couldn't wait till I got back. |

In the world many of my clients run in, not vacationing is part of the game. That's how friggin' competitive the world of Promo is. No thanks.
Those that do travel are working the whole time. Visiting London? Expect to be awake LA hours. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

given the competitive nature of VO, I find that a travel rig must produce equal or better results quality wise to my home rig... I can't afford to send out "just OK" audio, even for auditions...
On top of that, clunky and fiddly travel rigs turn out to be a waste of my time.. I'm not quite sure the iPad is quite there yet.. getting the audio in and up to pro quality broadcast level seems to be an issue, at least for me..
Maybe I'm being too picky .. or too paranoid..
these days, I find that gear has to be an afterthought, invisible.. if 90% of my brain is occupied with getting it to work and fiddling with it, I'm out.... that's the problem with the travel rig.. I love the portableness of the Ipad - Apogee Mic combo, but not really happy with the audio I am sending out.. passable doesn't cut it for me...
I did a recent test comparing recordings done with my old Mbox 1 and 2 Mini, and a decent LDC., and quite frankly feel they sounded better than my Apogee Mic/iPad combo. I'd gladly sacrifice the portableness, and go with a little more to lug around and better results at this point. |

Well, looks like a MacBook Pro, Apogee Duet 2, second of whatever mic, and a portabooth. That is kinda the conclusion I came to. A nice pelican case and it is all safe, sound and carryonable. |

What's the "whatever" travel-worthy mic of choice? |

Personally, I think you can bring whatever sounds best on your voice. I'd personally bring a 416 because it sounds good on my voice and won't pick up as much room noise as my studio mic. It's pretty road tough too.
That's a personal choice for sure. |

Lightweight and compact? Sennheiser 415 or 416. Also pretty good rejection, so you can leave the Porta-Closet behind.
Add this....

and your laptop (mac or pc) daw, and you're about as compact as you can be. _________________ Don Brookshire

That almost looks like a lawsuit Duet 2! Works for PC tabs Mac. I wonder if the quality matches the Duet. They sure did the software interface better. The OLED display gives you a ton more options over the Duet 2, and has basic integrated DAW controls. They did a stellar job with the interface. I'd totally get one of those if the sound quality was equivalent. Only downside is no bus-powered 48v...but carrying the wallwart with everything else isn't that big of a deal. |

My pop filter for the Apogee MiC just arrived, and it's the missing link for my smaller road rig. Check out the TwistedWave subject under Gear.

Prototype, soon to be available for sale at ewabs.com, designed specifically for the Apogee MiC but will work with others. The little window is so you can see the "level" indicator LED
