I've been very busy the last couple of days and one of my rather important hard disks took a hit. I've restored everything but believe I've decided to just hang up the PC and buy a mac. I checked the DigiDesign website about the Mac Mini, it's supported, but I wanted to find out if the unit's fan was excessively loud. Anyone?

Hi Kevin,
I've got no personal experience with the MiniMac, but after the unit was introduced, I was also interested in getting one. I've read (on the Digidesign Users Conference board) that the machine is as stable as a rock and it's super quiet, according to some users.
I think it's a great solution, and one I'm seriously considering when I make my next hardware move.

My G4 tower is a very noisy beast and I when I wanted to record I used to move it into the bedroom next to the studio, stick it in a box and connect the extra long cables. Keeping it there permanently was not an option (according to wife & baby). Needless to say, I got sick of doing this, so I decided to go with a Mac Mini for recording voice and keep the G4 for the post production.
Under normal working conditions the Mac Mini is a deathly quiet best. The fans do kick in if things get a little hot. This can come from a high ambient temprerature around the unit or if you are pushing it really hard. But if you are recording just a mono track in a comfortably warm room you should have no issues with the fan noise.

I've got everything set up now. I haven't used a Mac in about 10 years, and I'm not use to one mouse button.
Charlie, it's silent, well worth the expense.

just press the ctrl button and click--
That's like a right-click.
You can get a two-button mouse-- Kensington makes a dandy and Apple even makes one now.

Hopefully I'll be able to get this working with ProTools before I go to bed. The Mac Mini requires ProTools 6.9. I had 6.4 so I had to run down to Guitar Center earlier today. Ran into an old friend, AOL employee No. 6, who still hasn't started looking for a job, he quit a couple years ago. After I got the new version installed, I couldn't get the workspace to recognize my volumes as "Recordable" volumes, a non-issue on the PC. That was after I realized my FW hard disk had to plugged into the 002, after the DigiDesign docs state 002 -> FW Drive -> Mac Mini.
The wireless functionality works great ... but it's been a cluster this evening so far.

After buying a $200 FW drive, system smokes. Hands down the best VO setup I've used (because it's quiet), this rocks.

Dang! I love my Powerbook, to be sure-- but the Mac Mini would have been a less-expensive life-saver if it had been available last summer.

I use the old Digi 001 with an even older PowerMac G3 B/W. Works great every day. I'm just curious though, can I use my Digi 001 with a Mini Mac? Or do I have to upgrade to a Digi 002?
Deirdre, are you using an MBox with your PowerBook?

Yessir, I am! Top-flight. also got the Mbag from Digi so I have a way to carry my Mbox and Powerbook in one super-protected pack. Massively geeky but very functional.
