When a client asks for a "straight announcer read", what do they mean precisely?

Relay the the script in a professional manner. Informative, without putting people to sleep.

It can mean no overt personality or character to the read. Also, it can mean being a bit formal and "announcer-y" without going overboard.

It's usually pretty boring stuff, but it pays a good portion of some people's bills.

Not sure Joe. I am certain that phrase has NOT been uttered since 1989. Everyone seems to want the exact opposite of announcers (or at least they think they do). Even so far as to say...NO ACTORS. That one always gets me laughing. You feel like saying...well, I need to have your product given to me so as I am not acting in this spot. I know what they mean....I'm just sayin'.

Preferrably it would be a Jaguar or a Lexus spot as previously mentioned on this board not too long ago.

I would go with Dan-O and Bruce though.....they are not looking for a character read, guy next door read or any of that. Just a smooth, crisp announcer sounding professional.

As mentioned above... a straight announcer read is one where you sell the words and emotions with a no-nonsense read.

I make a pretty good living doing that read... (well almost make a pretty good living... LOL) Rolls Eyes

I don't buy it Frank. With you they AREN'T getting an "announcer" read. They're getting an F2 read, and there's only ONE place thay can get that.

I like THIS take on "announcers" from Marc Cashman.

Thank you Dave. I really appreciate the sentiment.

Nice read from Marc, too.

Thanks everyone. I did the read to the best of my ability. The client liked it. I got my first Paypal payment (woo hoo!) for a voiceover job. As always, I hope that the sentiment "work begets work" is true and I will have many more of these. Thanks again!

I've always considered myself a "straight announcer".

... get it?

(I love Marc. I know him in real life, and he's a very genuine and generous guy.)
