Just conducted my biennial test of Source Connect. Did the loop thing and heard me loud and clear. One session so far in ... nope, no idea. If anyone would like to do a test please get in touch if for no other reason than it would be a novelty to hear someone else as opposed to an echo.

Those of us who use Source Connect 3.8 (Windows) or 3.9 (Mac) should enjoy the opportunity while we can. They are soon going to be rolling out version 4.0 (for both platforms, and maybe Linux, too) and it will not be compatible with version 3 point anything. In addition, after 4.0 has been out for a certain amount of time (I'm guessing a year at most), they will shut down the servers for the older versions, rendering them useless. So the 700 bucks you laid out to have Source Connect until the end of time, turns out to be a somewhat shorter duration.
The good news is, those with version 3 will be able to purchase version 4 at a significant discount, possibly less than a hundred bucks. The bad news is, you'll also have to pay an annual subscription fee, also around $100. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Why take in one medium size payment when you can take in dozens of smaller fees over years and years? As the Mandalorian says “it is the way”.

Curiosity got the better of me and I asked Source-Elements about Lee's comments on 3.9 vs 4.0. To my surprise, I got an answer back quickly:
Hello Mike,
I've seperated the questions and made them bold, and inserted answers below.
Question:
"Those of us who use Source Connect 3.8 (Windows) or 3.9 (Mac) should enjoy the opportunity while we can. They are soon going to be rolling out version 4.0 (for both platforms, and maybe Linux, too) and it will not be compatible with version 3 point anything."
Response:
true and false:
Source-Connect 3.8/3.9 will not connect directly with Source-Connect 4.0, however there will be bridges available, to make those connections between the two platforms.
Question:
"In addition, after 4.0 has been out for a certain amount of time (I'm guessing a year at most), they will shut down the servers for the older versions, rendering them useless. So the 700 bucks you laid out to have Source Connect until the end of time, turns out to be a somewhat shorter duration."
Response:
Again, both true and false. There is no specific timeline at the moment for sunsetting the servers that enable Source-Connect 3.8/3.9, however, as people upgrade keeping those servers active for the shrinking number of users will no longer be financially viable at some point. It's important to note, that when it comes to a service product like Source-Connect, while the license was labeled as "perpetual", there really isn't a way for it to be a lifetime access. The service requires background components like servers and other infrastructure, which is subject to change as the architecture of the internet changes over time, and if we don't maintain that, or if we were to go out of business, a user may still own that 3.8/3.9 license, however, it would be functionally useless.
Question:
"The good news is, those with version 3 will be able to purchase version 4 at a significant discount, possibly less than a hundred bucks. The bad news is, you'll also have to pay an annual subscription fee, also around $100."
This is mostly true, however, the annual subscription fee in question, is the same as the 1-year support contract. The only difference between previous versions and SC4 for current buyout license holders, is that the support contract, name change to come, will be a part of the ongoing service, and not an optional thing. This helps us maintain servers, update software, and offer every license holder live support when and if they need it.
It should also be noted that users who have maintained support contracts will have their upgrade to 4 included as part of that ongoing support agreement.
The cost to upgrade will vary depending on the history of the user in question.
We hope this answers all of your questions. _________________ Mike Paul

Beat me to it, Mike!
I was going to post the exact same thing as I reached out to them today as well.
Surprisingly fast response for me too!
So basically, aside from the 'perpetual license' thing, if you don't get the support subscription it's only gonna cost you $100'ish. _________________ www.moosevoice.com |

An update on the bridge...
Hi Mike,
Unfortunately, since Source-Connect 4 and the bridge are not yet released, there are no support articles just yet.
I recommend checking back when we are closer to release, there will be more information posted about the bridge then.
Let us know if there's anything we can do in the meantime!
Warm regards,
Sarah _________________ Mike Paul
